I'm considering painting my first canopy, but after reading some posts the project is starting to seem a little daunting. How doable is this? Or would you recommend having a professional do it?

What type?
Is it the "bleach bottle" plastic or a fiberglass lid?

definately doable, you just need to make sure you have a VERY clean canopy, reasonably flexable paint, and a fuelproof clear coat.

i have pics of my painted canopy in my gallery. if you want something like that i can tell you how to go about it.

Go here for starters...

http://www.raptortechnique.com/painting.htm

My gallery has 2 canopies I also painted

It only takes two things to fly -- airspeed and money

If your talking bleach bottle...
Here's what I did:

1. Wash & Dry
2. Flash
3. Use Adhesion promoter
4. Two coats Lusterkote Yellow base; one white on the bottom
5. One coat Lusterkote clear; let it dry and apply your stickers
6. Two coats Lusterkote clear to hold them down

Most important step...

7. Get it Clear Coated w/Auto Body paint at a local shop

The results:

It's holding up pretty good after about 40 flights.

I have painted all 3 of my "bleech bottle" canopys with great success. The first one is 2 years old and been through multiple crashes with NO problems- there are lots of posts on this subject - but here is what I did -

clean canopy with Laquer Thinner
lighly sand with 600 wet dry sand paper wet
spray Krylon Fusin white for plastic - as a primer 2- 3 coats
lighly sand with 800 wet dry sand paper wet
Spray color coat - can be any plastic paint - I used Plastic coat from walmart - Glow orange - I liked the color - 3-4 coats sanding with 800 wet sand paper in between every 2 coats
Apply Decals
The most important part is the CLEAR coat - it HAS to be 2 part auto motive clear coat - I used PPG DuraClear 75. You will need a small HVLP spray gun and a compressor - if you do not have this you can go to a local auto body shop and they will happily clear it for you. The one I went to for my first canopy did it for free.

It will take you a couple of days working about an hour a day to get it done - in the end it is WELL worth it!

Good Luck
