Lipo Break-in Procedure?
I just recently bought a pair of Tp2100 3S Lipo batties. I also purchased the TP 205 balancer and an Astro 109 charger.

What is the recommended break-in procedure?

Charge at about 0.7C (instead of 1C) for the first few flights, then go fly! Try to make 2 or 3 short flights instead of one long flight with each charge, leaving at least 10 minutes between flights for the battery to cool. Avoid using full collective pitch for the first 2 charges (full collective is also the heaviest current draw...)

After running through 2 or 3 charges this way, the battery is as prepared as it ever will be.

Lipos are cycled at the factory for saftey and teasting purpose, I have never heard they needed to be cycled

I know you must cycle NiCad and NiMah.

LiPos need to be broken in. The bigger the pack capacity, the more this is true. The lower the pack capacity, the less this is true.

Please use a balancer.

If you can accurately estimate the flight time for a full charge, fly 1/4 charge, and let the battery come to ambient (15 minutes rest?)

Repeat two times (3/4 discharge).

Then after pack returns to ambient, charge at 3/4C just to be conservative. Let pack come to ambient before flying it again.

Repeat three times.

You now are ready to rock and roll.

BUT

Don't pull amps so as to bring the pack down to/below 3V per cell, or you will have shortened the pack's life!

And this is at 80F - hotter? Reduce amps.

This is how to get many cycles.

Wow I never heard of this 1/4 discharge thing then rest, to 3/4 capacity...etc.. then 3 times buisness. Curious is this documented by Thunder Power or Tanic or some company like that or is this personal findings???...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

I tried 1/4 charge. After 1hr the Astro 109 automatically goes into Timeout mode. It thinks something is wrong. Subsequent charge was at 3/4 charge.

The procedure of flying a few short flights with cooling off periods for the first few cycles on the battery does come from an old lipo instruction/safety sheet, although I posted it here from memory so I couldn't tell you who's.

I couldn't find it on the most recent safety sheets I have so it may no longer be the latest recommendation. It wont do any harm, just it might no longer be necessary.

Hmm, still not sure they need to be broken in, I tried this ONCE, and noticed nothing different from the pack I didn't cycle.

They are all factory cycles MANY times. Tested and they make sure they can supply the "C" rating. AMP tested..

So has anyone noticed a difference between two lipos, one that was cycles and one that was not.

I never did...

FWIW, I sent an email to Thunder Power a week or two ago and got nothing back.

From the lipo safety sheet on tppacks.com
First Discharge
Keep the flight time to 6-minute session with 15-minute breaks.
I knew I hadn't gone so senile as to be totally making this stuff up
