KSJ689 Tail Pitch Control Upgrade -- Questions???
I'm in the process of building a Venture 50 and I'm trying to determine a reasonable upgrade to the tail pitch control system. The stock plastic stuff seems pretty flexible. I've already converted to a rear mounted servo with cf pushrod. I'm also looking at the KSJ689, but the specs on it states that it can only be used with the aluminum tail case upgrade. However, it looks like it will bolt right onto the stock tail case.

Does anyone have any experience with this part?
Why does it require the upgraded tail case?
Is it the bolt pattern that doesn't match?
Any suggestions for alternative upgrades in this area?

Thanks.

part is now standard on Sylphide, except it is a JR item in black, see my gallery.

You can fit it on a plastic tail case provided you have the necessary two mounting holes that it wants, I've seen someone do it on a venture 30 tail case.

Alternatively you might want to go for the cheaper K&S 1425

K&S 1425

and you can see from the photo where you need to put it.

You can see from the K&S 689

K&S 689

that it requires the two holes into the tail case. The 1425 will require that black bracket to fix on (you get this with the JR metal tail case)

Is there any chance you can measure the distance between the bolt holes for me? If the bolt pattern matches the stock tail case, then I'll give it a try.

Thanks for your response.

18mm centre to centre

don't push it, if it's meant to fit in it will, if not then you have the wrong gearbox.

The venture 30's tail gearbox 60862 will fit it, not the plastic Voyager 50's though.

The bolt pattern in the stock tail case is also 18mm. Looks like that's a match. The only other things that would be worth measuring are the distance from the bolt holes to the tail rotor shaft (measured parallel to the boom), and the distance from the tail case mating surface (where this part bolts on) to the rotor hub (measured perpendicular to the boom). Any chance I could persuade you to take two more measurements?

Thanks a million for helping me with this. I tried contacting a couple of the distributors/dealers for KSJ product and they just tell me "I don't know".

synodontis,

I just took a look at the parts listing for my Venture 50 and it has the exact same gear box as the Venture 30. The part number is 60862. Since you've seen it installed on a Venture 30, I'm sure it'll fit my 50 with the identical tail case.

However, if you still wouldn't mind taking a couple of measurements as described in my last post, I'd be very greatful to you. It wouldn't hurt to be sure. The only thing I'm concerned about is the lever position when the slider is in the center/neutral position.

Thanks!

you don't need me to make the measurements, it will fit. K&S and JR are intimately linked. If you have the same tail case as Venture 30 the K&S 689 will fit, no questions. It uses the same tail shaft, there is a different tail shaft that JR do as well, but it's the same dimensions as we the normal one but just hardened.

distance from bolt holes to tail rotor shaft: 23mm (to the best of my measuring)

the other distance is unimportant since the tails shafts are the same.

synodontis,

Thanks so much for your help. Now I just need to find a supplier that has this part in stock. Shouldn't be too hard.

I was also toying with the idea of upgrading to the KSJ fan/hub. From what I read, it improves cooling with better airflow. Not to mention the "bling" aspect. Do you have any opinion as to whether this would be a good upgrade? Or am I better off just sticking with the stock plastic fan? One other reason for this upgrade is that I need to install a gov magnet. I'm not as confident that it'll work as good on the plastic fan as an aluminum one. It's possible the KSJ fan has a machined spot for magnet, but I've yet to see a picture of the underside of one. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

I don't own a Venture, but the fan assembly would most likely be the same.

I do have a Voyager 50 IMZ, and I've never had reason to change the fan. Also I don't like metal fans since they can crack on you (depends on the design of the fan). You will probably have to drill the hole for the governor magnet yourself on the metal K&S fan since JR do not do a governor. The plastic Voyager 50 fan is rather thin to fit a magnet in, but you can do it - just, it's just that I don't know anyone who has.

synodontis,

I'm having trouble finding the KSJ689. Looks like it might be a discontinued part. Do you happen to have the Jr part number for your sylphide tail rotor control? Maybe I can track it down using that instead.

Thanks.

synodontis,

I found what I was looking for right in my own "backyard". I talked to Len Sabato @ RcHelisPlus in Illinois. He imports all the KSJ stuff and had the parts I needed in stock. He also verified that the KSJ689 will bolt right on without any problems. I spent a fair amount of time chatting with him on the phone. He's a great guy and very willing to offer advice and assistance. What a great resource to have competition pilot like him also be a parts supplier.

Again, thanks for all your help. My new upgrade parts are on their way.

I know it's late, and I've only just seen your original post, But I've already done this very upgrade to my Venture 50 and It's works great, with no problems. You might just want to put a small amount of cyano on the tip of the two hex bolts before you screw them into the tail gearbox.(only a tiny drop!!)

All the best

BlueGarry1,

Did yours come loose? Or is this just a recommendation for "preventative measures"?

Thanks!

I got the upgrade and installed it this evening. Very nice! It makes the stock control mechanism seem like plastic junk. I'm very happy with it. Can't to get it in the air.

Thanks!
