Ditching the Align Crap (as much of it as I can without buying another heli)
Ok.. Im fed up with the rex se sudden motor stops. As much as I hate to do it I'm going to spend more money on a pile of crap and try to make it at least a flying pile of crap.

It seems the motor included with the SE, along with other parts of the kit seem to fall apart. That can only lead me to believe the ESC is probably not that much of a quality item either. If i'm not mistaken the heatsink falls off of these as well and whats with the heatsink on the outside of the shrink wrap?

The problem with the align products coming apart along with the sudden motor stops has made me decide to replace the motor and ESC. Heard good things about the Quark. Can someone suggest a good, reliable replacement motor as well?

I figure if these items do not help with the sudden motor stops then at least I have some quality components to put towards a 3D airplane.

ESC and Motor
I've only put about 7 flights on the quark but it's averaged 30 to 45 seconds more flight time than my old CC35. I didn't put the watt meter on it but my carbon Rex seems to have plenty of punch. I have about 20 flights on the Aon 3500 kv motor and for the first 4 or 5 min of flight it's gotta lot of grunt. My flying buddy thinks his Medusa Research and the Quark is the last coming but we'll have to wait for better weather to find out.

Thanks Madgadget... any suggestion for online purchase? I want to get them both from the same location and I'm ready to order yesterday

BTW... I'm running Thunder Power 2100 3cell if that makes any difference in motor selection.

I agree with finless, throwing money at it won't solve the problem. Align stuff isn't too bad but they do have some quality problems that's for sure. I have a CC45 and a Neu motor in my SE and I still have cut-out problems. Why? I don't know yet. My CDE is fine but the SE isn't. The more I work at it the better is seems to get. Of course my Align 35a ESC went dead this weekend and put my CDE in the ground but that's another story. It can be frustrating as Hell but I like tinkering with this stuff. If it's too perfect it get's boring.

If you can accept problems like motors, swashplates, tail assemblies falling apart and heat sinks falling out of a new $500 kit as a "not crap" then align sees you as the ideal consumer.

No the new components might not fix the glitch but I will have at least two quality components on the heli that can go towards something else. I definitely don't trust the Align ESC and motor to go in another heli.

SE = lots of carbon = a lot more chances for glitching

I do feel your pain. I will say this, I've had four T-Rex's, a V1, V2, SE and the CDE. I've never had a swash separate, never had an Align motor come apart and never had a tail fly apart. In fact, I've never had a mechanical failure in any of my Align helis. Doesn't mean I never will. I have had my share of problems though. Glitching in the SE, motor cut-offs, and two bad Align ESC's.

I've had R/C planes, helis, electrics, glo, boats, cars, motorcycles, a 12 foot blimp and everything else in-between. This stuff is expensive and I've had my share of disappointments and bad equipment. It's not just Align. I have an ION helicam that I have about four grand in. It's pretty new and I'm told now that the Hacker motor in it ($350) will fail probably within 30 - 40 flights. The last one that failed in my friends chopper has been back to Hacker for three months now. It happens. You either have to deal with it or get out of the hobby which I have threatened to do many times.

lowandslow and finless... If you have done the fixes, sanded boom, have continuity, placed components in every feasible position, used ferrite rings and its still not right... if replacing components is not the answer, what is? Do I need to put it under my pillow so the fix it fairy will come by and make things all right?

I like fixing things as much as the next person but the steps that need to be taken on Trex SE out of the box will never be justified. Accepting the flaws will never aid in improving future products.

Finless I see you are in Orange County as well. Since you seem to have the magic touch, I will gladly pay you to fix the problem.

Thats what Im looking for and hopefully he will reply. Took it out again today and got the same problems. First pack it did it twice immediately. Second pack waited till about 5 minutes in and only did it that one time. I also marked my packs to see if one did it more than the other but thats not the case. I think I have done everything I am capable of doing short of getting someone else in the loop so thats the next logical move."I'm a Virgin.. I'm just not very good at it. "

Sounds good. I'm free all day, all week and weekends. Right now I hover around the para surfers rigging area at the end of 1st street off PCH in Seal Beach, only about 1/4 mile from my place. I can meet you wherever but I will have to do a mapquest as I have stuck mainly to PCH and Valley View

I am going to replace the ESC and the motor simply for piece of mind but for the time being I still have the align stuff installed.

Gotta say it again..

Align stuff is not that bad...430/Align 35 esc works great...ALL my issues were with glitching...Only way I could solve them was A DX 6!!!
Put money into the 401 and a 9650...This little heli is more fun than a barrel of prostitutes!!

Actually I just called Gyro Hobbies and they have the Spektrum DX6 micro heli setup so I was thinking to heading that way now. What are your thoughts on this radio?"I'm a Virgin.. I'm just not very good at it. "

Just got off the phone with Bob (finless). Great guy and offered help with ESC and Motor modifications. First though I am going to get a DX6 and see if my motor stops continue. If they don't then I have another radio, for what I don't know but I will try to sell one of them.

I will definitely update everyone on the outcome. One flight should give me the answer as I have not flown one complete battery without a stop.

Hey guys,
This is a real interesting thread and has stimulated my interest. It's kind of like a dime novel and I'm sure that there has to be a real mysterious solution to this problem. I have been to busy of late to work with my Rex, but all the symptoms seem familiar. I'm looking forward to the next chapter and I hope to be back flying by next week. Maybe I'll have some input for you!

We try to fly at the UCSB soccer field when it's not busy. Now that school is back in session that creates a problem. There are lots of places to fly the Rex around here, but the big problem is flying the nitros. We do have a place that we fly that's off the beaten path.

Any resolutions to the problem yet? I have the same problems with the glitches. I have tried to keep radio stuff away from motor stuff as much as possible. I killed another set of landing gear skids today because of the motor glitch. Help!
