Minature Aircraft makes an Optical tach which is around a hundred bucks and works fine.

tachs
Gyroman is correct, the MA tach is really nice but you need a buddy to tach for you as you fly. You can be 10' or 100' away and still tach the heli accurately. It does have a max RPM of 2,000 however.

It's an optical unit, you look through a view finder type window that has a shutter in it. You have a rocker button on the side to increase or decrease the speed. You want to look through the tach and adjust it unti the blades appear to stop turning, then you have the headspeed.

Very safe and very accurate, you just need someone to help.

If you want an on board tach, I have one on my Raptor, it's a VDO bicycle speedometer. It cost about $32.00 total. It works off a hall sensor and includes everything you need. It mounts on the tail boom and can read out actual RPM in real time and will also save the max. RPM of the flight. It looks really good and works like a charm. I ran the magnet on the bottom of my mainshaft under the gear, the magnet is threaded and fit the stock Raptor 60 bolt that goes through the bottom gear/mainshaft. You only have to modify the sensor to mount it to the heli so it can be close enough to read the magnet.

The beauty of this system is you don't need anyone to help you. You can lift off into a hover and land and look at the speed on the max. readout. I don't recommend trying to read the tach while you're flying. That is asking for trouble.

If you want more info go to my website and look under the Raptor 60 Mods page. I have photos there.

Email me if you have any questions.

Good luck

Actually that's not completely acurate.
If you go over 2000 like we do for drag races you can go back to 1000 and just multiply by two the readout.
