I'm building a computer for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas.

It's going to be a budget machine but still I'm trying to get the best out of the budget I can.

When it comes to the graphics card it doesn't have to be anything special because she is not into games - just likes the internet, playing simple Barbie stuff and paint type applications.

I've identified a couple within my budget

Geforce 4 ti 4600 - second hand
Geforce FX 6200 - new

Both AGP

I know the Geforce 4 was the dog's danglies a few years ago but I know nothing about the newer cards.

How will the 6200 fair?

Cheers,

Nigel

I have a G force 3 that just hit the market when I got it, I also have XP and they really dont get along. I have several issues a week with the computer shutting down or freezing, every time I do an error report it says the graphics adapter, card or driver is at fault. I would do a search for both and see if there are any issues that could be avoidable. I now have a ATI 9800XT on its way. I only mention this because the driver for my card is the same as the one for the G4 I am pretty sure.

Bought a CHAINTECH GeForce FX5200 card from NewEgg for $40 several months ago. Crisp, fast, installed, loaded drivers, worked flawlessly right out of the box with everything,, G2, games, you name it. Here is the link. I am running WinXP.

I'll second the Newegg buy. I've bought from them several times and never had any bad dealings.

My son has a Chaintech Geforce 6200 w/512mb we got from newegg for like $110. I thought it would be junk but he loves it. He plays Half Life2, Call of Duty2 and many others with no problem. The graphics are pretty nice for the price.
