Q for you peeps over 3000 Headspeed...
You see allot of vendors pushing their blade grips etc saying that over 3000 headspeed using your stock plastic or stock align metal grips will fly apart. Anyone have this kind of experience with this happening? I am leaning towards those statements being cacka, but thought I should see if anyone has been changing grips and their go at this.....

I personally would not run 3000 rpm on a trex without a metal rotorhead. I suspect it would be a ticking time bomb.

oops, I just realized that your question was directed to people actually are running high rpms.

Well I have the Align metal head, but run the plastic grips, I found running the plastic grips took out a small amount of vibes I could not get rid of with the metal ones. Hooping the plastic grips will be ok as I am going to be upgrading my motor etc, and will be over 3000 slightly on the idle 2....Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

the last time i tach my t-rex with the metal head, at 0 pitch it was 3200rpm, and im still alive.

If i got $, I will run my T-rex on 10s lithium.

I dunno, I personally would not try it, but somebody has to, I just would not fly close in, lest you get a blade in the face... I would not want to be the guy who tried it and it turns out that align was right when they said its not meant ot go that fast....But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

I've had really good luck with the plastic grips. Never broke one inflight, only when hitting the ground. One thing you need to be careful with on the plastic grip is not to over-tighten the screw that goes into the ball. You'll either strip out the hole, or split the grip. I've done this a couple of times and ended up throwing the grip away instead of using it. Thread the screw in one time, screw it back out, put a tiny drop of CA on it, and screw it back in snug.

Ok..... so I guess is anyone using the Align metal head, plastic grips and running over and above the 3000 with no issues and also to ask....

anyone using those new MicroHeli Heads and grips with thrust bearings for T-Rex, or how about the HeliUp ones? Anyone..?

yeah i flew on sunday at about 3100rpms 6s lehner setup. 315 woodies... FULL metal head..... no probs. flys AWESOME. and seems to hold together well. before that have been flying for awhile at 2800rpms 5s w/out issue. precision main bearings from MH... i wouldn't use the stock main bearings at this speed, they are sloppy IMO

many batts on the precision bearings, and crashes too,,, still seem to be as precise as the day i got them.

as always though, proceed at your own RISK!

OICU's question here is does anyone use the PLASTIC grips above 3000 rpm, we know a lot use full metal heads above 3000, how about PLASTIC????But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

I am sure I have seen a post of someone that had broken his plastic blade grips consecutive to high collective input running 3000+.

was reading thru threads hastily while working on my trexy

agree with pito.... certain i've seen someone post about plastic grips simply snapping under high headspeed with load.

metal head probably a MUCH safer bet for 3000rpm headspeed.

if you on a budget at all, you might think twice about that...

numerous users around here have not had great luck with former products. course i've seen and heard nothing about the head parts and grips... just that i was an unlucky and involuntary 'beta tester' of their flybar system, washouts, tail system.... they seemed to have released some of these items w/out giving the parts much 'real world testing' NONE of these parts are in use on my heli any longer, for one annoying reason or another.

Align's stuff is proven and reliable and sturdy. just suggesting if you try their stuff, expect the worst, and hopefully you'll get pleasantly surprised and can let us all know how it goes for you.

Well see my last set of metal grips were the Align metal grips, the inside closest to hub bearing popped inwards causing some major damage. Under investigation the only thing that holds that alignment on the align grips is bearing reatiner loctite, I thought that was a poor design myself. It should be that the spindle tightens in on bearings and only thing that should create any slack or buffer should be the oring dampners imho.

I understand what you are saying about some of the MH stuff, I have had that as well, however how much can really be wrong with a head,,,,,, from what I see parts wise it should be ok, I will post report once I get all my gear in. I am waiting on a new medusa motor and konotronik esc,,,,, so we'll see.

i hear ya...

i did have to fididdle quite a bit with the Align grips to get them where i wanted them. since i've done that they are perfect for me.

i added 1 of the tiny brass collars (previously used as a screw-root inside the plastic washout arms). This collar is just under 3mm long, it has the identical outside diameter as a spindle shaft.

adding the collar made the spindle almost 3mm longer. then i used the brass blade root jobbies as spacers, in place of the aluminum ones that are included with the align cnc grips.

that combo will firm your dampening up to almost NONE. gives a VERY stiff head. if you run high enough headspeed ie 2700+, it will fly very stable but very reactive to cyclic inputs. now the loctite is still going to be the only thing in function holding the grip itself from sliding inwards past the small bearings.

but in terms of centrifugal force, the grips will never slide inward during a flight.

anyways-- good luck with the MH stuff, let us know how it goes and snap some pics, the head and grips certainly look very cool.
