OS 32 vs. 37
Hey guys,
Finally got my Hawk up, it flies great! I've had to use full stick a few times in descents and I know it's because my OS 32 doesn't get the head speed up fast enough. Will the OS 37 make a big difference? It's only a few tenths more in HP and I want full 3D capability. I'm also at 5280' in Denver and it makes a huge difference.

30's don't have a lot of power period - but you should be able to tune it and setup a throttle curve that does the get the head speed up there.

We have one OS37 in our club - it's a lovely little power plant and does provide a better flying experience.

hhmmm, I too would contribute your problem to the 5280', yes the 37 will help, in fact~ at that altitude you may want to look into the OS 46, but I would look into it really good because the OS 46 has been known to be temperamental in tuning, so I don't know if that kind of altitude will help make it harder to tune,,, keep in mind if you do go with the OS 46 you will need the 14T drive gear, 46/50 motor mount and a 50 size muffler,,,

and don't forget the Toki 40, it will fit right in as is...

I can second the Toki with their muffler. A nice long shinny job. Looks cool.

I am at sea level, but only using a fraction of what the engine has in power. 60% is highest point on my throttle curve. Hover is near 40%. Its new (so am I), so running sloppy rich.

You know, I have read the 46s are hard to tune several times, but I've owned several of them and the early ones had a tendency to be lean in the midrange, but all of the later ones have been great.

I've got one now in my Falcon with Schweizer 300 conversion and it flys great with no tuning "issues".

The government cannot give you anything without first taking it from someone else.

I've got a couple of OS46FXH engines and I never had any issues with mine either .At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Ditto here on the OS46FXH. I have a few and they have all been user friendly and long lasting.

But back to your original post. If you have a proper "idle up" throttle curve set up you will find that your OS32 will maintain its rpm in a descent and be able to stop the descent on a dime so to speak. Even an OS37 that does not have a proper throttle idle up setting will be much like the 32 in a descent.

So IMHO, your problem is not a "lack of power" but one of not having your throttle curve set high enough at pitch settings below hover.

5280'. I'm at about 4,000' and I know what you mean. If I'm sloppy (which I often am at my stage of attempting to fly), I find that that my OS32 will bog down. If I come out of a loop badly then the engine and curve REALLY need to be set up properly. I've had the engine bog down in a tight corner before as well.

When I had the Toki 40, it was certainly better than the OS 32.

If you are doing 3D though, I think I'd recommend the 46, it just has that much more HP in it. Although, it will run at a lower top RPM from what I've read.

I'm replacing my Hawk Pro (inverted meeting with ground) and I'll either get the Toki or an OS .37. I have a Rave with an OS 50 in it for when I get good enough to start tossing things around.

Thanks for all the advice. If I go as big as a 46 though why not just bite the bullet and get a hyper 50? A 37 is less than half the price of a hyper and I'd really like to 3D with it.Align T-REX 600N - YS50 - Looking for T-REX 450

The reason is you can buy a .46 for less money than the .37.The government cannot give you anything without first taking it from someone else.

If you check through other subjects, you can see where some folks have tried the OS 37 with the Toki 40 muffler. Sounds like mixed results. I think you'd be better off with an MP2.Got Money? Send it to me, I'm a Heli Addict.

I would definately NOT get the MP2 for the .37.. I am getting rid of my MP2 and using a Toki.. Toki seems to be the best "all around" pipe. You will have a hard time getting the MP2 because of the narrow powerband..


just my .02cents.. Ill sell my MP2 CHEAP if anyone wants to try it LOL

Michael,

I found the same with the MP2. I have not tried the Toki muffler on my 37 yet, but I found it produces gobs of power with the KSJ #1545 that was developed in Japan by some of their top flyers specially for the OS37.
