Your Marching Orders!
First of all... congratulations to Tim, Mark, DJ, SmithProd, PeaksViews, Jody... and all of you guys who are actually SHOOTING video!

I'm still sitting here, waiting on parts, building and rebuilding masts, and dealing with assorted trivia like magazine deadlines and dying in-laws....

Now... since I am being so unproductive in the AP arena... I'm leaving it up to you guys. I want you to all get together..... put SmithProductions new Sony HC1 onto DJ's helicopter.... and try it on Jody's mounts, with both the Kenyon gyro, and Jody's new Futaba gyro stabilized mount. Then take the video, let Mark compress it with the Flash Player codec.... and let's figure out what is the BEST way to do all of this....

Any questions? :-)

I was really just joking.... but it would be AWESOME if we could get a group together.... who brought all of their neat gear, and we started playing "mix and match".... to figure out what really is the best combination of gear.

Nobody could afford to have all of this stuff on their own (well, maybe Dakine....) but if we could pool the resources for some R&D.... it would be VERY interesting...

Right now I am pondering what the tradeoffs are between the Panasonic DVX-100A (which I own....) and the Sony HC-1... which I would like to own...

Yes... the Panny is heavier... but it will shoot in 24P which might be interesting.... but the footage that Smithproductions has with his HC-1 looks great... coming from a camera that weighs almost 1/4 as much....

What to do...? What to do...?

Anybody have any thoughts?

It would weigh alot but I'm wondering how a Kenyon mounted to the bottom of the gimbal of one of Jody's gyro stabilized mounts would do.

EXACTLY.... that's the "Mix and Match" approach that would be very interesting!

Hmmmm..... Jody, Mark & Hutch are Texas.... SmithProductions is in Oklahoma.... DJ is in Arizona.... and I'm right in the middle of everybody in New Mexico. Anybody wanna come play in my back yard? :-)

Yeah, I want to take Jody's ideas for the solid state stabilization and biggy size if for cameras in the 3~4 lb range.

My thumbs need all the help they can get! I bet I could swing a trip to New Mexico. Find some place really cool to shoot.

I'm serious.... I've got a "window of opportunity" coming up in early December.

My fiance' will be out of the house, tending to her dying parents in Massachusetts... from December 2 through December 11th...

So if you guys were willing to spend the gas money... I can put you up here at no cost.... I've got a guest room with a queen size bed... a queen size "Hide-a-bed" , a single size futon... and another big couch. We could hit the local Sam's Club for groceries.... and cook on the outdoor gas grill, etc....

Jody, Tim, DJ, Smith?...... anybody else interested?

We've got lots of scenic possibilities around here.... and I think I can even get us into Chaco Canyon, if you'd like to shoot aerials of places that the Indians ruined.

How about it?

Obviously, there are no guarantees.... but it has been such a mild Fall that I suspect that early December should be pretty nice. If it gets cold at night, it should still warm up to the mid '60's or so during the day.

It is glorious out there now... about 70 degrees...dead calm, and the trees have turned all kinds of great colors. Sure wish I had an AP HELICOPTER FLYING!
Grrrrrrrrrrr.........

This sounds like a Road Trip But I will have to sort out a few thing here first..

I have found things that Indians have Ruined before in West Texas.
So I would like to see what they Ruined in New Mexico too,
That would be Cool..

I'd be happy to have you guys over here whenever.... but I think the weather would be more to our liking earlier (like in December) rather than later.... January or February. Since we're a mile above sea level, it does get cold here... even though we're somewhat South......

So... if you're interested in coming to an AP gaggle in Albuquerque... with the idea of sharing ideas, technology, and hardware.... figure out when is the best time, and we'll try to find a "consensus" and go with it.....

I can furnish lots of mountain scenery, desert scenery, Indian ruins, maybe some Harley riders to chase with a camera.... the Rio Grande River, etc....

Whaddya think?

Oh great! No one ever mentions New Hampshire! While your fiancee is here freezing in Massachusetts, what would be wrong with a New Hampshire guy visiting old Duke Town?

Seriously..I am jealous of all you guys...you get to fly all year long, and with the wide open spaces as subject!

See how you guys are? As soon as your legendary, touristy "Fall Colors" are all lying on the ground... you wanna bail out! :-)

I've been to New Hampshire.... I have a daughter living in Bedford.... We fly into Manchester to get to Boston..... and I've seen your Mt. Washington, where they brag that they have the worst weather in North America....

If we pull off this "research project" in December, I'm going to post LOTS of pictures of us flying in nice, warm conditions!

So why don't you join us? .... I'd be happy to pick you up at the airport....

haha...yup..the leaves are all dead on the ground, waiting for their winter blanket of snow and ice soon to come.

Anybody have any plans for some 'heli snowshoes' or maybe some 'cameraship crampons?

We're gonna need them up here soon!

I'll be able to get a couple of days off and I've got a kitchen pass from the wife

Have sleeping bag, will travel! I've got it down on the calendar. If the weather's bad, or a different weeked would be better, I could go on any of the first 3 weekends in December.
