I'm in the market for an optical tach. Anyone have any opinions as to which model is "the most bang for the buck?"

Model Avionics is priced the best and works as good as any other tach.

I like my Miniature Aircraft X-Cell (part no. 0524) for 3 main reasons: good view, rechargeable battery and measures up to 3000 rpm which is good for small electric helis.

I have a Model Avionics SkyTach, and a friend has the Miniature Aircraft X-Cell tach. IMO, both are good tachs, but if you have the money to spend, get the Miniature Aircraft tach. The main reason I recommend the Mini Air is that it reacts quicker when checking your RPM on a fast climbout.

My $0.02

Flying a heli is like seeing the Matrix, it is a mind bending experience.

I would go with Dave's advice. We have been working with the older version of the MA tach in our field. Its a problem when we are overspeeding (passed 2000 RPM) and the tach only reads up to 1990.

We have been thinging about a new tach for some time but we have'nt got around to it. If you are planning to put new money into the hobby, go with the one that measures up to 3M.

I know it's not quite on topic but if you tacho a three blade head do yopu know if you just multiply the speed by two thirds to get the correct reading??? Sounds a simple question but needs confirmation.
Thanks
Denis

With optical tach, number of blades doesn't matter. What the tach displays IS the headspeed regardless of number of blades. I like the Model Avionics tach and mine goes to 3200.

There, their and they're. It's really that simple.

For the price, I went with the Model Avionics model. Thanks for all the responses.

If you wear glasses or shades, the Miniature Tach is much easier to see through. I personally find the the Model Avionics tach is hard to use with glasses.

Someday, I might put a cute statement here.
