I have an ark x400 and I've set it up with an outrunner helimax motor and a phoenix 25 esc. So now when I go to lift it off the ground it doesn't want to take off it just barely lifts off, and that's at 10 degrees pitch. This isn't my first heli setup either so I know what I'm doing to some degree. Until I found out what I did wrong then I'll realize I don't know what I'm doing.

im pretty sure there is a problem somewhere in powertrain section.

motor & battery temp? hot?

esc - gov (hi/low) or fixed?

pinion? motor specs (KV#)?

also a 1500mah battery is a little bit small for the x400, however since it's a kokam it should at least lift off. x400 are supposed to use 1800-2200mah.

also what is your throtle curve like?

Motor specs are 12-pole helimax outrunner, 3600 Kv, 1.6oz, 18amp max current. It has a 14 tooth pitch pinion. The gear ratio is 1:9.85:5. I guess I need to get the USB link to get the latest update for the governor. Motor doesn't get hot the battery gets warm. I'll have to do a thourough look over tomorrow.

#1 problem detected - 14t pinion is way too high...you should be using 10tooth or 11tooth pinion with that motor. i dont know if you damaged anything. you say it's not running hot so that sounds like a good sign.

#2 try running it in fixed throtle mode once you get the pinion issue fixed.

with a 14t pinion you were probably hitting way over 3000rpm unless the drag and inefficiency capped it. that is extremely unsafe for the stock wooden blades, which are rated for 2400rpm.

i run a 450TH outrunner motor with my phoenix45 in high governor mode. i dont have a usb link and it runs as well as my mega motor. no hunting or anything.

why do they give a 14 tooth pinion with this chopper if everyone runs a 10 or 11 tooth. Don't they test what works best.

it totally depends on what motor you use. in fact the heli shouldnt even come with pinions since it's a component heli. i am unsure why they chose 14t in 2.3mm and 3.2mm to come with the kit.

my mega motor uses a 13t pinion. if i was using an align motor with 2800kv then i might use the 14t. my 450TH is the same KV as my mega and works fine with an 11t while the mega doesnt.

buy the align pinion sets. 10,11,13,14,15

things are things you need to calculate when you choose a motor. that's your job not the manufacturer's. unless you bought this thing RTF or in combo from some store who should know what theyre doing.

pinions are not something you just put on and forget about. it's like tuning. you experiment with different ones to find out how to get the best battery life and coolest motor temp, while making sure the heli doesnt drop the headspeed so that it isnt as stable.

The problem is that my headspeed is not high enough. With the tach it only gets about 1800 that's 100% throttle, and at full pitch which is 10 degrees it floats about a 1/4 of an inch above the ground. What's the deal, this is really starting to frustrate me

If you cant get the headspeed with that big pinion, your battery is too weak, or your not using the full range of the speed control.
Is the light on the speedo for full throttle coming on at all?

Are you in Gov mode, or using throttle curves?

Using new 2100 3s thunder power. Throttle curves, and the red light comes full on with at full throttle. I think the problem is that this motor is junk. It does't get 3600 kv and I think helimax knows it. Supposedly they got that rating when they tested it but now they're having problems once it was released. HMMM how convienient.

JH4 - how are you getting the align blades to fit the Ark blade grips?

I have a pair of the align ABS blades and they are way two thin to fit in the grips. Any tips?

thanks!

First: You need a 10T pinion. Second: Your Kokam can`t deliver much more than 8amps constantly. They will give a little more when they are hot. You need 10-12amps.
1800rpm is only half of what it should have been with that ratio.

dlmob, I just ordered my X400 and I'm just wondering how it worked out with your heli? Did you change your motor? pinion?

Thanks.

set ups
Hi chaps

running the ARK 125 (ie the black motor) with a 1500 - 1800 3s Lipo (anything capable of delivering 10C or more) you should see 2200 or so on the head - 13 tooth pinion is what you need.

hope this helps - check that your gear or belt isn't tight - big losses if they are

performance
Oh yes - forgot to mention - with the above set up you get 8 mins plus good performance - should hover on about half throttle or so and have a good climb out
