I'm looking for my next scale project and I really like the look of the new Century Hughes 500D. The mechanics I would like to fit are a Hawk SE with an OS32 but would this engine be suitable for this 50 size ?

If it is a bit under powered would fitting an OS37 be enough increase or do I really need a 50 engine with the correct gears and larger blades?

For scale flying (not extreme 3D) I would fit an OS46H, change the 14T primary gear to the 13T unit of the Falcon, get the Falcon tail boom and older falcon wire drive, add some 600mm mainblades and vioila a GREAT inexpensive 50 size scaler.

...you have had success with the OS 46 Phil? For scale purposes, I would trust the OS 50SX-H ....more reliable...IMHO. I had an OS 46 in my Augusta 109A and I found myself spending more time on that thing and that was with the modification to the carb Those were days.

So I guess from the replies you're giving me that the best way to go with a 50 size fuselage is with a 50 size engine set up. That would be the logical answer but also the most expensive answer.
As funds are always limited I was looking for a cheaper route to using the Hughes 500 and what parts I already had.

Perhaps Father Christmas will look kindly on me this year.

Wemo,

I and a number of flying buddies have had a lot of success with the OS 46 when used with helis that have 8.6/1 to 9/1 gear ratios and with booms that are long enough for 570mm plus mainblades and / or a collective system that can provide pitch ranges that can result in a proper load for them.

I have used them in various TSK Mystar 46's (9/1 with 600mm blades), Falcons (9.1/600mm) and Ravens (9.1/600mm) and Hawk Sport (9.1/570mm blades), Bell 222/Hawk mechanics with large pitch range (9.1/550mm) and Bell 47GII (9/1,600mm)

I have found them to be difficult to set with some of other helis that used wrong gear ratios, limited pitch ranges and shorter blades. e.g. Concept 46, Nexus 46, Ergo 46 and a friends Raptor 30 that was just modified to use OS46 with the stock 30 ratio and 550mm blades.

Hi Copter Docter

Sorry to trouble you but it has been suggested that you are the top man on the subject of 30 size engines in 50 size fuselages.

I'm after some advice on if its a workable set up of an OS37 powered Hawk SE (550mm mains) fitted into the new century Hughes 500 or is it best to go for a 50 size engine ?

If you get a moment please could you let me know your comments.

Many thanks for this and other advice you have given me in the past.

Stebbo.
