Hi,

Please help me out!!I m running a 450TH with CC35 and 14 tooth pinion. What are the settings on CC35 should be? Has anybody tried a 450TH on a X400, would be good if anyone can share their experience with 450th on a X400...

Cheers..

something bad is going to happen...like a blade is gonna fly out, or the esc or motor will fry

dude, 14t pinion with the 450th on the x400 is way too big unless youre using a 2cell lipo or something.

it's supposed to be run with 11-13 for a 3 cell lipo...

I also have this setup, and I just decreased the throttle curve a bit. However, I really need to buy a pinion.

Where is a good place to buy a screw-on pinion?

Thanks,

Brett

Does the X400 have the same main gear teeth as the T-Rex and the same modulus? The Rex is a 150T / 0.5 mod main gear.

14T might be a bit wild if so!

I run a 13 tooth on a 450TH with headspeeds around 2600-2700. You WILL need a good battery to do this. My TP 2100 2nd gens didnt have a high enough discharge to keep from bogging, but the TP 2100 Prolite packs can keep the RPM's up with no problems. That headspeed is not at MAX throttle either, so a 11 tooth or 12 tooth should work fine if your packs arent up to the task, or you prefer safer headspeeds in the 2300-2400 range. I also use the TREX pinion sets with the nice set screws, and they work great. Problem is, there is no 12 tooth pinion, just 11,13,15.

Dankers:
The main gear on the X400 is 138 tooth .5 mod.

PINIONS:
http://www.grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/4213
the 11,13,15 set is the correct bore for the 450TH (3.17mm)

http://www.grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/4212
the 9,10,11 set is a 2.3 mm bore

hi,

I have changed the pinion to 14 tooth, it runs sweet with a lot of power, nothing gets really hot on a 8C 2200mah cheap china pack. Got a good 12 mins hovering and grooving around time.

Cheers,
Tony

heli_me,

you started this thread with a 14-tooth pinion. What size did you change to?

Where did you get your battery pack? I have a 12C 1800 pack, and it is a bit hotter than I would like after flights.

I tried a 10-tooth pinion but the headspeed was far too low, it was barely high enough to keep the heli stable. WOT current draw with 10 degrees of pitch was in the 12-13A range, but there was not enough power left over in the case of a problem, like flying a Piccolo on NIMH batteries...

I need to get some other pinions. Thanks for the links heli_me and skeppley.

Take care,

Brett

Hi,

With the same setting, I tried a 2100mah 20C pack last night with 14 tooth pinion, i noticed that the x400 didn't really enjoy it. It was overloading, everything got really hot except the battery, flight was rough. Amp exceeded 32A...got to a stage, ESC was shutting down

When i switched back a 8C 2200mah pack, the flight got a lot smoother and the power was back with acceptable temperature. Therefore, i stepped down 1 more pinion to 13 tooths and tried the 20C pack again. That made a difference, flight was a lot smoother. ESC was not shutting down, temperature was ok...

Bare in mind, i tried 13 tooth with 8C pack, it was ok but lack of punch of power. It takes more effort to lift off and i doubt any pinion with less tooth can do a better job.

Out of that excercise, the battery may make a different on the loading.
When hovering, i get am average of 10 - 13 amp. I would like to get down to 7 amp when hovering but i doubt the motor can deliver it. My friend got down to 7 amp in hovering with ARK-125 motor, CC25 ESC.

I got my battery pack from china when i visited last month.

Cheers,
Tony

I assume the voltage drop on the 8C battery is quite large, so the motor turns slower and doesn't draw as much current. When you went with the better battery the voltage stayed higher. It would be interesting to know your head speed with each battery.

I am going to order a few pinions and try it out. I am going to buy the TREX pinion set, since it includes 3 pinions for less than most places sell 1.

Cheers,

Brett

Hi,

I will try to measure the head speed differences with different battery.

Hey, T-rex pinion gear set doesn't come with 14 tooths as i bought my pick sometime ago. It had 11,13,15. 15 was too big and almost kill my ESC. Be careful on that.

Cheers.

450 TH
The French cats got this T-Rex rocking:

http://www.pitounet.com/Videos/450th.wmv

As far as which pinion here a formula that works for me +/- 50 rpm.

138 main /13T pinion = 10.6 : 1 ratio

3000kv x 11.1v = 33300 max rpm

33300 / 10.6 = 3141 rpm on the head (w/o calculating ~20% loss)

3141 x .8 = 2513 rpm of true headspeed after losses w / 13T
_______________________________________________

3380 x .8 = ~ 2704 rpm after losses w/ 14T. This will be good headspeed IMO.

That all looks OK Zoom, but your Loss percent is too high.
The Trex they are running is getting 2800 headspeed with a 14 tooth because the main gear is 150 teeth and losses are only 10% on these helis.
http://www.justgofly.com/tech_450TH.htm

150 main /14T pinion = 10.7 : 1 ratio
3000kv x 11.1v = 33300 max rpm
33300 / 10.7 = 3112 rpm on the head (w/o calculating ~10% loss)

3112 x .9 = 2800 rpm of true headspeed after losses w / 14T ON TREX

NOW ON X 400 as i mentioned above 13 tooth should be used:
138 main /13T pinion = 10.6 : 1 ratio
3000kv x 11.1v = 33300 max rpm
33300 / 10.6 = 3141 rpm on the head (w/o calculating ~10% loss)
3141 x .9 = 2826 rpm of true headspeed after losses w / 13T

The headspeed is almost identical to that of the rex and a 14 tooth.

Also in my above i have measured with a tach, and that number is darn close.
I run at 2600 and the light on the speedo isnt on til max pitch.

So a 13 is good for flipping around the sky, a 12 tooth is good for lower C batteries, and a 14 tooth on an X400 will give speeds of 3000!! Wow

Hope it helps

Nice thread guys. Skeppley, you're a gent, thanks for the info. I will be running the 13T on the X400 on the TH, I run this on the Rex right now and with 335 blades I have tached this at zero pitch, 2720. Of course under hovering load its less.
