Quick joke
There was this frenchman who was a freshman when I was in college. There was this swedish gilr who pissed him off something fierce at dinner, on a table that sits 6 people. So he got up, pointed at her, took a deep breath, said really loudly "You BEACH!" (Note: He may have said "YOU BEECH!", but it definitely wasn't "you BITCH!" and he left. I'll bet that to this day, he has no clue why every one (I'm kidding, I mean everyone, haha) on the table laughed at him, and took the side of the (much cuter and bigger-titted) swedish chick.

I'm one of those foreigners who can spell english better than most of my U.S. friends with whom I exchange emails. Come to think of it, although you can't expect people to be perfect (I'm not!), it is awful how some otherwise articulate, intelligent folks can't spell to save there (I'm kidding! I mean their ) lives!

Yes, I did proof-read this message more carefully than usual

Hmmm

now that this thread seems to be about correct spelling, would you ppl be so nice and explain me the difference between "where" and "were" ?

I suppose "where" comes from the location... "I bought the switch where I got my Tx" and "were" is the past from "to be" like "We were newbies and didn't know better"

is this correct? Its because it appears that sometimes ppl use "were" in different context which makes this whole thing rather confusing for me :|

Thx
Tony

spritefiend, my co-hobbist. you are part of the problem just kidding, in a kinda, but not really way.

language is all we have over the animals. one should respect it more. and, since when is "tha innanets" an excuse not to speak properly....like its some kind of bastard medium. it is quickly supplanting all other forms of communication.

like i said...just kidding, kinda...but, not really

if it ain't broke, break it.

The one thing we have over the animals is thoughts and ideas, as long as you can convey them in a way that is understandable to other human beings, it doesn't really matter. Some people get too pussied out by bad language to bother looking deeper into the context. For whatever reason I have dealt with people from a lot of different countries on a personal level and I never assault them for their language, and I have become able to translate a lot of poorly written english. I'm not interested in how they write, I'm interested in what they are saying.

i agree. but, speaking in person is completely different than the communicating the written languange. there are facial and other bodily gestures; intonation; inflection in face-to-face speech. a person can say alot without ever opening their mouth.

the written languange however requires one to obey some rules to 'convey' a message in exchange for the loss of body languange and vocal context. poor writing skills only serve to obfuscate the communication in their absence.

i'd have to seriously debate the fact that some posts are 'understandable to other human beings'. yes, the words (often) make sense and can (sometimes) be understood. but, the context/meaning can be blurred beyond comprehension. a little pride in knowing how to string a few letters together into a coherent sentence goes a long way here.

if it ain't broke, break it.

exactly. its communication, when you fail to communicate, THEN youve failed. i feel about this pretty strongly, i dont purposely go out of my way to make my point about spelling at all, for the most part i do strive to use decent grammar and punctuation, but im not a nazi about it.

i do believe there is a time and a place for perfection when it comes to this stuff. legal documents, books, and newspapers come to mind where you expect perfection. then there are places where its not so important, like the internet. i do still believe this

if you want to go after someone about proper spelling etc, go after those that substitute, two, to, too for 2, or you for u, what for wat. for instance, wat r u ^ 2? dis iz the peepz u shud go 4, cuz dey r the tru bastards of r language. if you think im making this up, find your local high schooler or lower where communication and language is being learned for the real world.

Communication is the only reason I type in a forum. I really don’t care if I misspell a word or two. If I can convey the message... get my point across then I succeeded and all should be happy as everyone is on the same page. I really hate people that are bent on perfection especially when it’s something as stupid as a post in a forum. It’s almost as if they are jealous that with less effort the other guy is able to reach the same outcome.

I think I just heard the bell ring... class dismissed!
