When we talk about the fuel foaming in the fuel tank because of vibration, is this a quantitative phenomenon or totally subjective? The fuel in my heli's tank foams a bit, like maybe a 1/4 in. "head" of foam. Is this significant? Can fuel develop a more prominent head of foam, like 1/2 or even 1 in., if the vibs are severe enough? I've seen helis that have no foam or even visible agitation to the fuel. I have a slight tail wag problem and I'm thinking there’s a vibration that needs handling.

I would say you need to chase down something that is either out of balance, or off center. I have no foaming fuel in any of my three heli's. So I would say there is definitely a problem.

Thank you. I'm not sure what to check at this point. I've balanced the fan and clutch. The engine could be the culprit. I'll try a new engine as a last resort if necessary.

You said you balanced the fan and clutch, but did you check for runout? Fuel foaming is due to high frequency vibrations; likely culprits are engine or clutch fan related.

Cheers,
Dan

I'll pull the hi-rev parts and check them for runout and check the balance again. Thanks!

Foaming is going to come from high energy, high frequency shakes. The TR and MR system aren't going fast enough to cause that kind of agitation. If you've balanced the fan and flywheel, then it's probably a run out problem with the start/clutch shaft. It might also be a bent start/clutch shaft. To a lesser extent, direct vibration from the engine, which is usually very rigidly mounted, can be a contributing factor.

That kind of shaking isn't only making your fuel foam, it is tearing your radio apart slowly, but surely.

Foaming fuel
I had a problem with my Sky Fox, the whole tank was foam and the engine would lean out and over heat. I could build a new Sky Fox with the parts I brought. And all it was in the end was a bearing in the engine.
It felt a bit rough to spin it. So I would start there before you spend any money.
Read my posts if you need any more info.

This is NOT the solution to the vibration, but it will stop the foaming absolutely: 6 drops of Armor-All in a gallon of fuel.

Who would have thought? Armor-All...go figure!
