The following side by side comparison tests would be a valuable addition to any credible Heli/Plane oriented magazine but we never see them. Why?

Glow Plugs (for example Enya #3 vs OS #8)
Glow Fuels
Main Blades
Tail Blades
Various Heli Tools
Various aftermarket accessories
Batteries
Servos

Surely there are well experienced Heli flyer magazine writers who can do these tests.

Magazines need to sell ads to stay in business. If they actually did side by side comparisons they would loose the advertising revenue of the loosing products. Hmm.....sound familiar? So if you want honesty, you have to rely on word of mouth. Something that's unfortunately not always allowed here.

ShempHoward, that would be nice... but....

I think in the heli industry... some things that are best for one person are not the best for another...

Think blades for example...

they could compare batterys... with meter tests and such.

But I think most of what many think is the best is personal prefrence.

In the end it is best if the various manufacturers are put to the test because then they can compete for our business! I think that they should work harder at developing products to make money, not at shutting down their competition.

Great idea, I want to see engine vs engine, and gyro vs gyro etc.

Kinda like the product reviews in PC magazines, like X800 vs GF6800 or something.

At the moment nothing is really in perspective.

tests
I agree that it is personal preferance, and ultimately my decision, But I would prefer to read honsest reviews on items that I am considering buying. That would be a big part of doing the research needed, before making a decision on what I feel would work the best on the application I am going to use it for.

Thanks, Shemp. I'll see if I can make some of that happen.

Comparisons
I'd love to see direct comparisons/reviews also. I talked to Jon Tanner of MHW mag about this once, but didn't get the impression that he had much enthusiasm for the idea. I think the worry has to do with advertising dollars, but the advertisers will go where the readers are, and direct comparison articles are found in many other magazines. The idea that it's all personal preference doesn't impresss me much - there are a lot of objective criteria that can be used. For motors - more power is better, for mufflers - quieter and lighter with more power is better, for helis - lighter stiffer, cheaper, less parts, more collective range, fewer parts to align are always better. I'm tired of the syrupy stuff that gets printed in most of the mags and honestly don't find that I learn much from them. Occasionally I'll buy one, but not too often any more. steve

I'd like to see,,, take any size 50 heli that has been built and flown, yet it's in very good shape with good quality electronics, preferably pick a heli the tester has never flown,,

then he tries all the different 50 size rotor heads on this heli, flies each head for a good 2 or 3 gallons so he can get the setup right and get a good feel for each head, and then writes about how each head performs..
