Well, I'm still rebuilding my HII I got second-hand. Looks like front and back conicals on the tail gots to go.

So, the tail is held by clamp to the body, so you just unscrew and slide it out, right?

How about help on the tail gear box and getting those conicals out and replaced?

I have the GWS micro pinion puller to help out.

Thanks for all the great hints and tips, guys.

I usually remove the boom complete from the main chassis.

Get a set of side cutters behind the conical gear at chassis end, carefully squeeze them behind the gear to help force it off. If its toast then you can just crush the gear till it falls off.

I then remove the tail blades and remove the tail shaft from the gearbox. To do this i grip the conical gear in some cloth with my fingers and rotate the tail hub whilst pulling on the hub to remove the shaft from the gear. Last to come off is the conical gear on the long shaft at the gearbox end. I usually remove the entire shaft with gear attached, place shaft in vice and pull gear off by hand or if its being stubborn crush it with pliers. NOTE i do this with the METAL driveshafts, you do not want to clamp a CF drive shaft in a vice unless you intend on replacing it with a metal one or a new CF shaft.

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks,

I'm sure this has been covered before. Like most noobs, though, I do appreciate the help. Reading your post helps me visualize how to do the repair more easily.

BTW, is it worth upgrading a stock carbon rod tail drive to either Walt's or the stainless steel ones? Eric L's site says it not really necessary, although the steel ones are pretty cheap, if they make it less likely to splinter or crush those stock rods.

I had one of Walts Carbon ones, an early one, it vibed
I now have one of the later MS metal driveshafts and i have no problems with it, although i would suggest going and buying one from the shop as they dont always come straight...
