I fly a Raptor and know nothing about Falcons except that this is one of the early ones (bone stock) with plastic balls on the swashplate, plastic clutch bell, cone start, etc. I know it needs a hex starter adapter number one.

Since I failed at converting this guy to TT, I need to get this Falcon up to speed a little bit for him with a box of goodies for X-Mas.

What does it need and what is the best way to do this? Any conversion/upgrade packages available? Anybody have anything for sale I could use?

TIA, Mike

Mike,

There are so many things different from the early Falcons to the Falcons today it is almost impossible to advise you where to start. There are hundreds of upgrades you could do but without seeing the heli, I wouldn't even know where you should start. You could go here: http://www.centuryheli.com/support/...tml?currentid=2 , and get the current instruction manuels and do some comparisons and come up with a course of action.

One thing you should be aware of, the earliest Falcons had an 8mm main shaft, so check that before you start ordering upgrades like swash plates and such as the new models are all 10mm.

The government cannot give you anything without first taking it from someone else.

Mike,

That sound like the ancient original Falcon 46 (about 8 to 9 years old). IMHO, it should have been called a Hawk II/46, as it was really just a Hawk II with longer mainblades, a different primary gear (for a 9/1 ratio) and a longer tail boom.

Consequently when the current Falcon SE units were launched a few years ago, there was few parts of consequence that remained common between the two. The current units are like mini 60's, the older ones where really bigger Hawk II's.

In fact most components of consequence on the current inexpensive Hawk Pro are superior to those on the old Falcon 46. e.g., swashplate, mainshaft, bearings everywhere, torque tube drive etc. I guess a good comparison, considering how fast R/C helicopter technology is advancing, would be like comparing a 16 year old Honda Accord to a 2005 Honda Civic.....big difference

The 8mm mainshaft was also shorter then the current 10mm unit by about 8mm. Consequently it does not have the same pitch range. (about 17 degrees - +8.5/-8.5). NOTE: the pitch range on the current Hawk Pro or falcon SE is a comfortable 22 degrees (+11/-11).
So if one wants to stay with the 8mm unit (limits the 3D capability) then the following is the minimum changes I would suggest.

a) convert to the old Hawk III composite/metal swashplate (HI3146A)
b) the hex start system (HW3005A start shaft and CN0402 hex adapter)
c) replace the clutch support bushings with the CNBB1812 bearings
d) replace tail rotor control rod system with that of the old Falcon III (HW3064B control rod, HI3160A guides and HI3102A bellcrank)
e) replace the single boom strut support to the dual system of the current Falcon series (HW3202C and the H13202-1 boom clamp/fin mount).

He may find it more economical to buy the Hawk Pro, and using the blade grips and bearings from the 6mm Falcon 46 rotor head (using all the other bearinged head parts from the Hawk Pro), and the engine mount and the primary pinion from it, transfer the engine and radio gear to it. The result would be a much more potent and precise machine for not much difference then the money he would spend on the changes suggested.
