That is the recommended setup for the stock NiMH battery.

If you were referring to the 9 tooth that is included with the aerobatic enhancement kit, it is not recommended. I've tried, and although a weak hover was obtainable, it was certainly not as good as the stock 10 tooth. Probably will just lead to disaster in my experience.

What happens if you use the 10T pinion with a LiPo battery? Seems like the head speed would be ~10% greater, but can the motor stand the strain?

Apparently many people run that combo without any problems and experience good run times but I believe it is not recommended due to the possibility of damage to the 4 in 1s ESC.

Please do not use a 10t with li-po it will cost you the 4-in-1 ,I know cause it happened to me. I installed the auto-rotation gear on my blade ,the 9t pinion didn't line up well so I had a gold label hummming bird motor ,not realizing it had a 10t pinion. Well I installed it and the pinion lined up well with the gear ,but at the cost of the 4-in-1. Now I put back the eflite motor with 9t pinion ,but pulled the pinion down to mesh well with the gear. just waiting for the new 4-in-1 and I'll be up in the air again.

Just to add some info to help explain why using too high of a tooth pinion will kill the 4 in 1 ...

As you increase the needed torque to drive the motor you also increase the current draw. By reducing the size of the pinion you are reducing the needed torque to move the motor. Since the 4 in 1 can only output x Amps, if you attempt to draw more than x (even for short amounts of time) it will hurt the ESC.

Now you also need to consider that when you give the heli high amounts of pitch (say during a climb) you are also increasing the amount of stress to the motor which will increase the current draw. So if you are just hovering around, you might not hurt the ESC with that 10t pinion, but as soon as you start hard flight, you add much more power reqs.

You've convinced me--I'm sticking with a 9T w/lipo.
