Hi,

I am not very good at painting but ok with computers so decided to have a go at creating some graphics for my ECO 8. I drew a basic outline in a CAD package and printed out paper versions and used trial and error to get the right shape.

Then in a graphics package called CorelDraw I jazzed it up and applied a carbon fibre texture, I found a picture of carbon fibre on the net and used that as the texture. After putting text on and using a couple of logos (eg. Hacker Motors) again off the net I reversed (mirrored) everything and then printed out on inkjet transparency. The reverse print technique means that the printed surface goes against the canopy for protection and the shiny side is out -

I painted the canopy using Tamiya polycarbonate sprays first with an undercoat of metallic blue then a light spray of translucent silver. I then used double sided clear tape to stick the decals on -

I then sprayed the whole canopy with pearl clear to seal everything, in the sunlight it looks fantastic -

Tight double curvature areas are a no no but with a bit of imagination all sorts of graphics can be printed in the same way.

I am sure this has been done before, just strikes me as an easy way to get reasonable results

Ken

reasonable results
I would say a lot better than a reasonable result, looks stunning, nice job.

Some Raptor ones like that would be awesome

I need to try that for my next MaxiR canopy. Any idea how the stickers would get along with nitro?

Not sure about Nitro, if you apply a few layers of clear coat I would imagine this would seal the edges and protect the acetate, its worth a try!

Man that looks sweet, one question, how did you figure out how to get the outline to go around the windshield?? I am in the process on making my CNC router into a Vinyl cutter and want to do the same thing you did, but in Vinyl, which will be Glow fuel proof.

Thanks

Hi Wedge,

I was lucky in the ECO's case as it comes with decals, all I did was scanned these and imported into Autocad, resized until correct and then drew over the outline.

I then made the changes that I wanted, printed out on paper to test and adjusted etc

Thanks everyone for your comments

Ahh ok, sounds good, that would be easy then, I could just lay paper over the canopy and trace out the windshield outline then scan.

Thanks for the tip.
