Its not a question of the title of the event, its one of consideration for others. There were, what 450-500 pilots there last year, of which maybe 10 would enter a nats competition. Stopping nearly 500 people from flying for half a day while 10 did their thing wouldn't be a popular move. Anyway, the Jamboree is a fun fly thing and not exactly the right venue for a National competition.

This year the scale Nats is at the Nats. If it doesn't work out, next year, it may be at IRCHA with someone else running it.

Congrats to all! Dr. Tim - nice job - again - do you ever NOT come in the top 3? Mr. Sprayberry - sweet job! Now I'm afraid to go to Dalton. Sorry I missed the event but I am leaving for Asia for 2 weeks and couldn't combine the two. Looks like a great time was had by all.

Short, simple, sweet and controlled. Love those 'no hesitation' landings and the backward take-off. Very confident and an excellent 518. Congratulations to Len.

no Dave, not really, in the normal corporate world, yeah, landings like that can be a bit unusual but in the millitary setting normally seen by these choppers, soft touchdownds arent what is important. i saw on the millitary channel blackhawks touching down to insert troops and they got them on the ground pretty quick and hard.
the other thing is,in the mandatory maneuvers, the translational landing is done all the way down with no hesitation before touchdown. so basically, you establish your rate of descent and maintain that to the ground. yes, the ground stops the descent
course you wanna do a rate that you know your model will tollerate
a big congrats to len and all the participants.

Scale Nats
Again I would like to congratulate all the winners of this years Scale Nats. I also would like to commend all the contestants for their participation in the contest. This was the best turnout we have had and the models and the contestants labor really made this a great event. Thanks especially to Peter for the work he put in to preparing and arranging this event also to Craig Bradley and the AMA for their support with the site and all the things needed to make this happen. Thanks to my fellow judges, Brian and Jack, we had a tough job with the level of the model detail, flying skills to choose the winners, it was too bad several had some mechanical problems which prevented them from flying. It was a great event, perfect site, and perfect weather. I hope everyone will/can return next year and more will be able to attend to make this the premier Scale contest, after all this is the Nationals. I know I will be back either as a contestant or judge, so I need to get on the stick and finish some projects. Again to all the scalers out there you miss a great event, so let get going and make next years bigger and better. The AMA now knows there are Scale Helicopters out there. Dave

Thanks for the insight on the landings....I guess when your taking small arms fire, smooth landings are not your first priority.

I had a great time putting this event together. It wasn't hard to do and everyone co operated to make it flow smoothly. Even the AMA helped by finding us our own area and mowing it smooth for us, setting up a tent, tables and chairs etc. I think the fact that we had more entries than all the other classes except F3C put together made a significant impact. Thats one reason why its important to get an entry in even if you dont make it, it shows scale helis are alive and well out there. Here are some pictures of some of the models.
Some of the details on Lens model

Here's a video of Tims "Incident " later, but I have to warn you, when it started going wrong I was too busy watching to point the camera at the model!!!!!!

His machine went into failsafe, engine to idle, all controls hold, he regained control about 5 feet of ground and was able to soften the landing. He also had a failsafe op on the first practice flight on Sat. but everything was Ok until Sun.DaveDavison,GasGob,WhiplashGas,Spectra,JRXG11MV,12X
