I just finished testing (maidening) my new project. After reading the previous threads on a belt drive mod for the 3D Pro, I decided to take it to the next level by designing a frame and belt drive. The belt drive also incorporates a bearing to keep the Main gear from wobbling.

The frames are made of a G-10/ CF sandwich and the LG are laminated G-10 f'glass. I have photos in MY Gallery if anyone is interested. Also, if there is sufficient interest, I may make up some kits for sale.

The heli was SPOOKY QUIET when it is flying.

beautiful!

looks to be a stock shogun tail? what did you shim up the 3dpro boom with? custom bushing?

what all would be included in the kit, what's the 'required parts list' look like to finish the mod? and, what's the cost looking like (provided there is enough interest, of course) in the kit.

nice work. i'm glad to see interest in the little 3dpro coming back. gonna be a fun winter tinkering.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Hi Cuda

The present flying prototype and the one in the pictures is using the Shogun V-1 Boom and Tail assembly with the 3D Pro tail blades. using the shogun main blades as well with a couple of adapter bushings. Using the 3D Pro boom would be OK as well with the sleeve I could provide to allow it to fit on the TailBoom mount on the frames. I am working up a Tail Gear case just for this kit now and will hopefully have it flying soon.

It looks like the price would be in the $45 to $55 bracket for the basic kit and around $60.00 for the one mostly complete. Remember that I am a retired machinist and this is a hobby for me. I am still sourcing the parts and materials so a more complete price is yet to be determined.

Also looking at putting together a kit for those flying FP on a HB or Dragonfly to get rid of the "Hokey" motors and gears on those heli's..

Thanks for looking. The 3D Pro is a fine little heli.

You can modify the stock shogun tail case and tail pulley so you can use the stock 3D Pro shaft and tail assembly. I'm currently using the stock shogun case with great results. This could help keep you costs down.

If you come up with a FP belt drive kit similar to this one it will be a hot seller. Those DD tail motors are a joke.

Nice stuff.

Hi CRB68,

Awesome work!! I'm very interested in kit for the 3Dpro and will be equally interested in what you come up with for the FP. My winter bird is a FP Elite and I'm sick to death of the tail motors. The DD tail sounds like a weed wacker and still burns up eventually

Keep us posted!!

Cheers,
Leslie

i know this is not related to the frame but i see you have the gws gyro, how does it perform for you?? i have the same gyro and the tail holds very very well almost to well, The piro rate is very slow almost like its going thru water. is yours the same way? i have tryed reducing the gain this helps but still slow piro. rate.

Thank you Marke

Hey Marke,

I have the PG-03 on it as you saw and it works very well for me. My piro rate is very quick after it starts. It is a bit slow to start the turning but when it gets going, it can be slow or fast, as I desire. I like the gyro and has been a good buy for me. I also use the Futaba 240 on my Trex and it flies very well as can be expected.

For those that have asked about the FP conversion.

It is basically the same as this frame set but with a complete tail setup & struts included. You would need to install your present servo mounting column and main shaft to it. I am working out the details for this one now on my HB. Looks promising and gets rid of those "Hokey" DD motors and you don't have to go to separates,...etc.

The only concern for the FP kits is the weight. I figure just throw a bigger 3s lipo at it and it will fly.

The weight is a concern, however, a little more weight on the FP heli's is a plus since it makes them a bit less twitchy. Another plus is that you can use whatever batteries you want without having to worry about them burning out the tail motors and setup is easier since only one esc is required and a gyro.

Weight is going to be really close to the stock setup (HB at least)

Getting about 15 minutes flying (non 3D) out of my TP 1320 G2 packs with this mod.

Crash Tested now
I have finally crash tested the frame set. It survived with no frame damage. Landing gear struts broke away but no Frame Damage.

I was flying testing it out with a set of Like90 Shogun blades and was having a ball so much so that I looked down at the timer and saw I was on a programming page and started pushing the mode button to return to the timer. When I looked up it was ready to drill a new hole in Mother Earth. It did!!

Broke the Blades off and didn't even bend the blade axle or mainshaft. Just broke off the LG struts.

I am very pleased with the results.

Nice work
You are a man after my own heart. I'm currently working on a design for a larger heli.
I recently picked up a 3d pro but blew a tail rotor grip about 3 minutes into the flight. Luckily, there is no other damage.
Let us know when the kits are available! I'll wait before I start upgrading this one.

Thanks

CRB68,

Nice work on your design. I look forward to seeing some video of your bird in action, as well as specs. Plus, what is the weigh AUW including the 93g TP 1320mah?

I'm very familir with Phoenix and it suburbs, but where is: TombStone, AZ ?

" Plus, what is the weigh AUW including the 93g TP 1320mah?"

The weight is 322.1Gm ready to fly using Shogun blades.

I have really crash tested the frames this week and they are holding great. Everything else has been bent or broken, but the frames are still showing no cracks or breaks.

I am on dial up here in the wild wild west so video is kid out of the question. I will be at the Phoenix fun fly next month though if anybody is going.

I am also working on a frame set for the components from either Trex or Shoguns. I hope to turn 350 mm blades with it.

Tombstone is southwest of Tucson on US 80 between Benson and Bisbee.

Right now it looks like I will not be making the kits available since interest was not up to justifying the work in making more than a couple.

CRB68,

If your bird weighs what you say it and is as crash resistant as you say it is, a ton of people will be willing get one. All it takes is a quick cheezy little 1 min video to bite people in their A$$. Then they will jump on the band waggon. I suspect the first person to get their kits together will sale out immediately. Heck from the way it looks, Century should buy your design as version 2.

SBC DSL is as cheap as dial up right now @ $15/mo

Or if you know some one with a camera, you can film it, put the footage on a disc and send it to me. I will find web space to host it, and post links on atleast 3 forums to get the ball moving. Let me know what you plan to do.

I'll tell you a story. Along time ago, I once proposed that the 400DF would be the best motor for the 3D Pro in terms weight, performance and value.

Thread:
http://www.runryder.com/t159230p1/?...0df+best+3d+pro

Long story short: The skeptictics and nay-sayers jumped all over my case. It wasn't until I posted a vid showing the a balistic climbout, before the skeptics were silenced. Now, most of the people know the 400DF is the ticket, and Century has recently tried to come out with an outrunner, but I'm afraid it is way too late. People all ready trust the the 400DF. I paid retail for my DF, I even send the owner of Century the video to encourage him of what was to come for free. My vision of the Pro offering a better motor than that himax, fell on death ears. Now they want to try to offer an outrunner, but its too late. You have to listen to your customers.

I say this. If you build it, and put it out there, they will come. Heck, I envy you retired cats with nothing but time to sit around and make crap.
