I checked the fuel filter as well and that was fine. This was before the WD40 test. The lines are good and a friend cleaned the fuel filter so the gas was the only thing. I should have remembered the flooding we had a while back but I thought since the containers were closed...

Anyways, the WD40 idea was great, I didn't think it would actually burn that well but when I reved it fine...

Question: The engine ran on a 40:1 mix, would a 50:1 be too much of an increase?

Try 32.1 most small engines are happy on it.

NO!!!! you want MORE oil, not less!!! If the "correct" ratio is 40:1
I suggest DECREASING the petrol content of the mix to ,say, 30:1 (30 petrol to 1 oil) 50 would be much less oily, and lead to premature wear. as previously stated, adding extra oil will obviously lube the engine better,it will run a bit cooler and also smokier. the only possible down-side is that the plug will oil up in which case fit a "softer "plug. I have had a motorbike and an outboard that ran 16:1 (1/2 imperial pint oil to 1 imperial gallon petrol) smoked like a bugger and dripped carbon-y oil everywhere, but didn't wear out you will get a build-up of chocolate-brown carbon on the central nose,-this can be scraped/wire-brushed/sandblasted clean,if needed.
I'm still gobsmacked at a 50 hr. design -life.-It's like buying a cheap car and throwing it away after only 1,500 miles !!
WD works because it has a highly inflammable, volatile solvent,as well as a lubricant. IMHO It's much kinder to start reluctant diesels with a whiff of WD, than the usual ether spray. Ihava also had success with a petrol-soaked rag held over the air inlet so the engine sucks in the concentrated fumes Rough but effective!

Haha yeah I realised my mistake with the fuel mix, stupid of me really. Good thing I didn't mix anything yet

I love these small engines though the carb is more complex compared to a heli carb or at least it looks that way but both are still fun to work on.

I hope to get cracking on the hovercraft project soon, I just need to find a large piece of plywood...
