It was a beautiful day here in T.O. and the Teambob boys were gathered at the Markham field getting ready for a day of Canadian smack. Kevin (Rappy112) was warming up with his newly built Dyna-x and while in the middle of some piro flips POW!!! Off came the headblock which chopped off the boom. The rest of the heli fell out of the sky like a lame duck.

We had talked about whether there was a need to repace the original Robbe headblock with the new headblock from Ramster and Alex but having never actually seen one fail, it was hard to justify the replacement until now. Kevin's headblocks have been in a few crashes and are a few years old so I am sure that the stress of the years of service was also a contributor to the failure.

I will definately put on one of the new heads before I start to beat on my Dyna-x.

I can't post the pics to my gallery right now but here are some links to the pics on my website.

Sorry to see this happen Kev but I know you will have here back in the air better than ever

Hey!

Glad to see Robbe/Dyna/Ramster still alive in Canada. I thought I was the only one still flying Robbe.

Other than the head issues how are you guys liking the Dyna-x?

Hello Blair,

So far I am so impressed with the Dynax that I am selling my other Fury. The Fury flies great but the Dyna flies smoother and is just as agile if not more. I will be upgrading the headblock which I believe is the only weak spot right now. I think I will also go to a hollow main shaft as well.

New Head Hubs
Kevin,
Sorry to hear about your Robbe head block snapping off crashing your heli.

I’ll be done machining the new 1-piece head hubs by the end of this week.
They will be available by the middle of next week.

Hi Guys
Just wondering if this head is the same as the Cuatro
I originally had an issue with my Cuatro the head block came loose
from new but after tightning it it has been ok
I have quite a lot of flight time on it now but it is a little concerning
Thanks
Michael

HI.

Sorry to hear of the head failing. I personally have only heard of two pilots having this happen and one was many years back.

It sure would appear that as 3d gets more agressive and dynamic, naturally the machines are getting more stresses applied than maybe expected when designed.

The Robbe hub has been around for many years as I see it and I think only of late have a few incidents accured. Much like some are having flybars shear in flight readily..

I have two Ramster design hubs on mine and find no difference in flight or assembly and have never stressed my machines enough to have a hub fail inthe past, but I sure feel secure now in that these babies won't tear off.

Mind you, whats going to fail next in line? I think it is amazing how they hold together with the current 3d trend...

Ya,

I thought the past breakages were due to the head blocks shallow mount and the use of hollow main shafts. I believe Bob J put one in a few years ago for that reason.

The new RamsterDesign 1-Piece rotor hub is compatible with the stock hubs that come with System-88.

The new hub fits the Futura SE, Futura Nova, Futura Cuatro and the Millennium I, II.
The eccpm Pro version (Millennium3) hub is being tested and will be available in the near future.

The 1-Piece hub retains the mechanical geometry of the old stock head, so no modifications are required when mounting the new hub.
What’s not the same is that the stock version’s weak points were corrected and beefed up in the new hub design for more rigidity and much better rotor head support.

Having the “luxury” of doing short production runs, I can QC every single part reducing the possibility of “iffy parts” or a bad batch being shipped out.

Blair

I have not seen a hollow shaft snap but I have sure heard about it happening. I have one on my millie, but my millie does not see that high a load. On my gasser with the extra weight, I use a solid shaft due to this concern.

Some theorized that it was more likely to break in flight if the shaft was reused after a crash (since they do not bend).

I have seen photos of the heads that have broken and they break off at the top of the swash driver.

Ramster's design eliminates this "unsupported collet" design by making the head solid through this area. If you look at it from a mechanical perspective, now that the head is solid in this area it moves the bending moment from the area of the J-bolt to the bottom edge of the head. With the unsupported collet design, the inherent weakness and flexibility of the system meant that the head pivoted at the J-bolt, but with ramsters head since it is solid, now the pivot is at the bottom edge and away from the bolt. This may help preclude the hardened hollow shaft from snapping.

The only way we will know is if someone mounts the ramster head on a hollow shaft then puts it through its paces. If it lasts indefinitely, then that will be a good data point. Any volunteers?

Kev,

If you broke the head, I'm surprised you haven't done a flybar yet!

I have managed to escape the breaking head, but converted to ramsters block before it was too late... have got a good collection of half flybars though..
