at 8ft you should have just autoed it down it wouldnt have time to bleed much off the rotors

always hit the hold when engine stops and put more pitch in the hold mode.It will give you just a little more pitch to slow the heli when it gets close to the ground.And tighten the blades so that when you hold the heli on its side and give it a snap down wards the blades do not fold. And practise hitting the hold many time so you can do it with out looking or thinking about it.
