D70 is a great camera, I would give the nod to the XT for aerial use though as it is extremely light and compact for a DSLR

Either way you cant go wrong but depending on the pricing you can get for the XT versus the D70 I would go with the XT (I did )

hello
there is no canon d70 but there is a nikon d70 and a canon 350
personally i use the nikon d-70 for my aerials and other series of deferent type of cameras like the:

1: SONY VX 2000 3CCD 4.500 euros
2: SONY PC330E 1CCD 2.100 euros
3: SONY DCR HC30E 800 euros
3: NIKON D100 1.500 euros deferes with the lense type u use the price
4: NIKON D-70 1.250 euros deferes with the lense type u use the price
4: CANON IXUS V3 compact digy cam

we had started with a canon ixus v3 a small compact digital camera for our first aerials and from that time had used all the above cameras for our needs with deferent types of mounts and helis.

regards

What is the curent climate of opinion on the Olympus 8080 Widezoom on this site? I am considering that one in the next few months. DP review and such seem to rate it well.

Re: Oly C8080

Solid performer, solid construction. A bit weighty.
Easy to trigger with the GenLED IR trigger, can also work the zoom with a second one.
Has a live video out.

Mike,

I just bought a Canon Powershot S70 to start myself out with -- it may not be a DSLR, but it's considerably lighter and takes great pictures. It also has a video out and can be tripped with an IR LED.

Here's a review on dpreview.com with sample pictures.

As much as I'm a big fan of Nikon optics, I think Canon has an edge in the digital realm. Especially if shooting JPEGs -- the Nikon D70 for example looks considerably better in RAW mode than JPEG mode, but the Canon cameras seem to do a much better job of shooting in JPEG mode -- if that's your preference -- as the difference is almost not noticable at all. (I still shoot RAW for the flexibility of post-processing.)

I don't have much recent experience with some of the other brands (Olypmus, Kodak, etc.) but there may be some other options there as well.

Don't underestimate the ability/value of the Canon G6. It weighs less than any DSLR. It has many pro features and a live video out for previews. It also works with the IR LED. All that for under five hundred bucks, shipped.

You may spend a smidgen more at Wolf camera but they have an extended warrantee that no one else has to my knowledge that can’t be beat. You might find it a tremendous benefit sometime in the future.
