Rappy....

i think the mini raptor ones are just decals on a stock canopy...

but agreed--- who sells those decals or other decals that are different from stock?

i know there was one site that had a couple decals sets out, like 2 different ones, but i didn't like the colors on one set or the decal on the other... so both were a 'no go' for me.

I picked up the fury canopy from Modefo's and haven't been able to figure out a way to mount it without substancial modification. I'd be interested to see how others with this canopy have done it...

JMD canopies are really nice. However you have to buy from a dealer and not through him anymore. FXAeromodels and Helihobby carry his full line of canopies. FXAeromodels also has some waterslide decals for the raptor, fury, etc. Other then that there aren't really any decal sets available.

argh...
i want my cake and eat it too.....

guys i'm so bad with painting, striping, etc.....

i can build and fly a bird... but my weakest work is when it comes to a canopy, decals, painting, cutting, etc.

not sure why, but everything i try to paint ends up a pure disaster... i'm lucky to apply the align decals w/out troubles.

those canopies LOOK awesome. but they look like half-sheets that you have to join together, then paint, then decal... argh--- wish it was all done for you... like the couple of canopies at modefos... but those are either too plain or don't like the coloring.

anyone build one of these JMD models? how hard to 'join' the two sides together and tape off areas you don't want to paint-- and what kind of paint? lexan?

I joined together the Fury canopy and it's no problem for an average builder. You need to trim the halves first and the plastic cracks fairly easily so you need to be careful as there are a couple of sharp corners. Gluing it is a little tricky as the parts flex easily and aren't 100% perfect mates. You aslo need to fill the seam if you want a smooth finish. After all of that, you still have to rework it to fit the Trex - that's where I'm at now and I don't have any ideas. I could mount it really far forward and that would work, but it wouldn't look right. Mounting it back towards the normal canopy mounts would require extensive modification, also ruining the look. I don't want to chop it up unless I can see how it would look first. I chucked it in a drawer until I can come up with better ideas. The styrene version I got is pretty delicate anyway and would be more appropriate for showing only based on my current flying skills. Maybe the PETG version is tougher.

All canopies and fuselages available require cutting, masking and fitting. Unfortunately noone has made one that's either preassembled or formed in 1 single piece. Glueing and fitting the canopies isn't the hard part it's the masking. There's a lot of time involved especially since they don't come with overspray film already applied to one side.

The JMD canopies are a little easier to work with since they come with cut lines and center line seams where you join the 2 halves. It does take a lot of work for such a small item. I've got 1 raptor canopy I haven't touched yet, I guess I'll do that next.

You probably don't want to use lexan paint as it is designed to be painted on the inside of lexan shells - it doesn't give a smooth glossy finish. The clear PETG version isn't really suitable for painting from the inside as it has tight spaces - too hard to mask and paint (if not impossible - maybe if you did it before assembling, but then you'd have a nasty seam. You can just use plastic model paint on the styrene version (maybe the PETG one too?).

If you're going to paint from the inside you should paint first then join. It's stated in the instructions for both darthdk's and jmd's bodies. It's a pain in the rear but it does look nicer from the outside. As far as the seams are concerned that's the biggset drawback with painting from the inside. But you can always hide the seams with decals and trim tape

As far as polycarb paints are concerned, they are a little on the matt side but that can be solved with a simple light coat of clear gloss polyurethane overcoat. Glosses it and protects the paint all in one shot .

PTEG has the same properties as lexan as far as paints are concerned. You can use krylon paints which I have heard works too. Model acrylic or laquer paints are harder to work with and like I said tends to crack. For the styrene one you can use any type of paint, just don't overdue it on the laquer based paints as it will eat through the styrene.

Also with styrene you can use the orange tubed testor's model glue to glue the halves together. And it actually bonds quite well. For the PTEG and lexan you'll have to use pacer's polycarb CA or Shoe Goo.

I have the raptor copy canopy and it just about fits my hummingbird.
I think they are for micro's such as the hummingbird, jabo and such.
Just to small for the t-rex

I've been making my own water slide decals on my ink jet printer. I downloaded Serif DrawPlus 4.0 for free and have gotten pretty good at it. These are my two heli's with same paint scheme but I could use any fonts, colors or designs. Pretty cool...
