I think the big question is "What Now?" I mean since Jacob is apparently dead (at least in corporeal terms) what is Jacob's Nemesis going to do? Who is he and what is going to happen when the others confront him with John Locke's body?

Since we know that "the incident" was the detonation of a bomb, is that what toppled the three-toed statue? So what's up now? Is the time line altered? Is Oceanic 815 just going to land at LAX like it was supposed to now? It's just too open ended until we know what happened immediately after the incident.

But we will find out!!!

What a way to start the new season.
Desmond is on the plane. The island is underwater.

When we see the island under water and everyone stepping off the plane at LAX as if nothing happened, that was back in 2004, on the day the crash WOULD HAVE happened. But the crash never happened, so likely there was a significant change of events that were triggered by the incident in 1974. (season 5 finale)

Tonights episode with Juliette dying, them visiting the temple and the incident involving Sayid, this all happened several years later, in 'present day' lost.

They have no choice but to "go back" to the island because, remember, "you can't change your destiny". Underwater or not, being on that island was their destiny.

Thats my best guess.

Ok... Wow... Way friggin cool episode.

The magazine Rose is reading on the plane is the "Weekly Woodsman" loads of possible anagrams there including the words "Doom" and "Swan" (as in the Swan Station being blown up). I'm sure there is a dead nutz anagram that means something but I can't get my head around it now. There is the X-Files "The Truth is out there..." saying on the back of the magazine with a photo of a UFO.

Here are the curious points:

Hurley on the plane is a cool "nothing bad ever happens to me" character. That was not the case before he got on the plane originally. He was headed off to Australia to find out what the curse of the numbers meant. He was convinced bad things followed him everywhere. How is the past timeline changed - the time before Hurley got on the plane so that Hurley is different? Desmond is on the plane so there is no Swan Station with Desmond in it pressing the button. Everyone else seems to be ticking along the same as they were back before the crash except Hurley and Desmond. Hurley and Desmond are different. And their differences go back beyond the incident.

We can only be witnessing a totally alternate timeline. Maybe a "Flash Sideways"?

We know that the smoke monster is "Jacob's Nemesis". And certainly the deal is "What Now" for the Nemisis? Where is "Home"?

Juliet was certainly right - it worked, they are back in the present.

The Smoke monster kicks arse!!! I want one!!

It was cool seeing Professor Arnst (sp) again.

Gonna be a great season!

I have to retract my earlier statement.....
I am going to be sad to see this show leave.

I loved Charlie's line to Jack: "I was supposed to die"

We can only be witnessing a totally alternate timeline. Maybe a "Flash Sideways"?

I like the idea of a "Flash Sideways"; that may explain why it is that Jack seems to be the only one that thinks he knows everyone that is on the plane but can't seem to remember why.

Well as far as I can tell, they are the only ones that have any ties to the island prior the plane crash. The numbers tied Hurley in, and Charles was Desmond's.

I haven't quite wrapped my head around where the writers are going to take us. They've already given us a lot of info, but not enough for me to tie it all in together.

Yup. We're on the same track here (this means you my need a CAT scan ). After typing that post last night and my head hit the pillow that is what popped in my thick skull. The bomb detonation countered the effects of drilling into the energy pocket and the original "incident" never occurred. Not sure why that puts the the island at the bottom of the ocean but it is and it's influences are removed. Desmond and Hurley no longer have to ties to it and their lives are different. Everyone else is on the same track they were prior to the original crash.

Oddly enough Sawyer seemed a little more cheerful as well. But that may just be Sawyer.

Maybe I will go play with some anagram programs and see if I can unlock a little more of the magazine clue.

The Infection....
So I've figured out what this infection is, or as Russo called it the sickness. Follow me on this......

Last week the shows creators came out and said that we are currently seeing two realities that are taking place at the same time.

The Asian guy in the temple said that once people become infected who they once were no longer exists. Russo said something very similar.

What the "infection" does is tricks your mind into thinking that you never reached the island, and that your life would have continued as normal, but your body remains on the island "claimed" by whatever Jacob's nemises is. Think along the line of the comic book (or Alec Baldwin film) "The Shadow".

This would mean that everyone that survived the Oceaniac flight 815 crash would wither have to die or become "infected" since we see all of them in this alternate reality where they are not on the island.

However, this clowding of the mind into thinking that your is continuing as normal isn't perfect. That is why Jack, Kate, and the others on the plane seam to think that then know eachother. And why Clare called out Aaron's name when she was in the hospital, and said that somehow she knew thats what is name is or was, yet she is still alive on the island.

It may take a second but think about it......

That's a pretty cool theory. I'll rattle it around my empty a skull for awhile.

Some interesting points for last night - good episode BTW:

Jack barely knows Claire is his sister but the others always seem to know everything about everyone.

Now we (kinda) know what happened to Claire and we know why Kate changed her mind about returning to the island: she wanted to find Claire.

How come the others are so intent on making sure Sawyer makes it back to the temple ok but are ready to shoot Jin? Why is only Sawyer so important.

That one "other" that was escorting Kate and Jin was the guy that Kate knocked in the head with a rifle when she and Sawyer were rescuing that kid (don't remember his name - Alex's boyfriend) from another season. What did he have that other guy shut up about that he was fixing to say?

Other thoughts:
Maybe once you are "claimed" maybe you evolve into a smoke monster. But why did the others bother saving Sayid if they knew he could go really bad?

Somehow these two timelines have to merge.

We didn't see Jacob last night but I'm betting we will eventually see the clash of two smoke monsters - Jacob and his Nemisis - possibly in a near final scene.

ETA: Seems that Claire has turned into Danielle Rousseau. Claire is the one who set up that trap that Kate sprung. Rousseau claimed that her crew all went nutz and she had to kill them. Seems now that she was the one that was "claimed".

Remember how Desmond was afraid to go out the hatch without his environmental suit on? Remember how he took shots to keep from becoming "infected"? Maybe this is the "infection" they are talking about.

Till next week!!!

So a little bit of ground was covered last night. We found out that Smokey was once a human and that all the survivors were all candidates to take over Jacobs job? So why would Smokey make a big deal about that? If Jacob leaves then wouldn't Smokey? Unless he was telling the truth about him seeing no point in protecting the island and ending it all so they can all go home.

The flashside ways was very interesting too. Especially Locke meeting Ben at the school.

Oh and what was the deal with Smokey screaming at the little boy? For a minute it was like John Locke was actually there telling the boy not to tell him what he can't do. Very bizzare.

After watching this season develop with the whole Jacob plot, I started thinking to myself, where did the time traveling fit in? Jacob 'recruited' all these people to the island but the time traveling just doesn't seem to fit anymore? Was it just a symptom of moving the island and nothing else to it? Or just a way for the story-tellers to portray the back-story so the audience doesn't feel so "lost".
