Had a nice tail down crash a couple weeks ago. I admit it this time, pilot error. Got it all together and the weather has been windy and rainy. today was a little rain and a little wind, couldnt stand it so went out to at least a little hovering action.
Well i use a 18v drill to start, battery was dying....then it really died.
Grabbed my regular starter and then i noticed something. It woulndt spin the motor, then the blades were in my way, tried to move them, and they were really hard to turn (clockwise hard, cclockwise spinned freely)...and it wasnt turning the motor either.
Checked for hydrolock, held tail down, drained a few drops out of the muffler and pulled off fuel line for another 2 drops, then pulled out glow plug for about a teaspoon.
Well nothing....same thing.
I just dont get it cuz it was normal untill my battery died on the starter. And it also worked the other day when i started it just to hear it run.

So now i got home, dropped the motor...motor spun by hand fine, clutch liner looks good...put it back in, and dammit, works like it should.
Just one of those weird things? any ideas that i should replace something as its heading for a failure??

Thanks

If you suspect it's hydrolocked, take the plug out and with the heli and transmitter on raise the throttle to full. Then spin your starter over and it will blow the excess fuel out.

Also did you check to see if the crankshaft nut was secure? Sometimes it comes loose and then jams up into the clutch bell. A bit of blue locktite helps keep it in place.

Also remember 18V is fairly hefty for a 30 or 50 size motor. I use 19.2 volts on my YS91. But if something isn't quite right and you try to start a 50 or 30 with it you may damage the engine.

If we get some better weather I'll be down at the RAMS club in Auburn. You're welcome to come on down and fly.

We need some sun!

I tried to spin it with the plug out, and it woulndt budge, and in order to not bust the engine i didnt force it. But even just spinning the blades by hand clockwise, it was hard to turn, and this was not turning the engine over, but just slipping inside. But i didnt have the throttle on full.

Nothing is loose inside, i checked again, the engine is out right now, but when i put it in place, its all fine, kinda weird.

I thought the rams club didnt like helis? Thought i read that on their website.
My schedule is so screwy its hard to find someone to fly with or to meet for anything. Im in renton and a few huge school yards that are always empty and huge boeing parking lots work nice too.
Also my brother lives on 5 acres, cant beat that. My own free flying field.

Dont suppose your in auburn this weekend, wow this rain sucks!

Nope fan is at tight as when i put it together....im going to put it back together and see what happens. maybe it was hydrolocked, i dont know.
Maybe it tried to start backwards? im not sure if it would do somethign to that effect.
I just dont see anything wrong...will just see if it happens again i guess.
