I noticed a leak coming from the engine and traced it back to a broken cylinder head shim. Can i do without this shim or will I need a new one?

cheers

Some folks call them shims but they are actually gaskets to seal the cylinder to head fit. Yes, you will need a new one.

TM's right.

The gasket needs to be there. Besides sealing the head to cylinder joint so the engine will run properly, if you were to remove it and somehow still have a good seal, you will have effectively increased the compression ratio on the motor which can lead to some real nasty tuning and running troubles.
