Hello,

I'm trying to find a good solution for viewing and capturing video from a wireless camera system at the field. I have a laptop I can use, but sorting through all of the USB capture devices is extremely painstaking. There seems to be an extremely large price range and the differences among devices are hard to discern. There are a number of really cheap products such as this one:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-100-112&depa=0

But it seems that a very fast system is needed to record video (probably because the processor has to do all the work, as opposed to video compression built into the capture device).

Can anyone comment on these products and/or reccomend one?

Thanks for your time,
Chris Hansen

Many of the small DV cams out there will do analog to digital conversion on the fly. You connect incoming audio/video to the camera input and you have "live" digital available at the firewire output that you can record to your laptop. As a field solution, it would be nice since it is battery powered and compact. Alternatively, you could just use it as a recording tape deck as well and don't even bring along the computer. Once it's on tape, it's still digital so there's no loss. Best of all, you get a free video camera with the deal. An example would be the Sony DCR-HC30 (which I think has now been replaced by the HC32). About $450.

That's exactly what I wanted to do at first. I didn't think my Sony TRV30 had video inputs but it does! The jack is not a standard video jack so it looks like I'll have to buy or make a connector. Now if I could just find my camcorder manual...
