Howdy fellas, it's my great pleasure to anounce the 1st Heli Funfly in the
Rochester, MN area!

WHEN? Saturday May 21st (2005) 9am to 4pm (or whenever)
(raindate of Sunday May 2nd (2005)

WHERE? http://www.marionrcflyers.org/Directions.php

WHO? Heli people, those who want to be heli people, and those that are and just don't know it yet!

My local club, the Marion RC Flyers of Rochester have agreed to reserve the flying field for Saturday May 21st (rain date on Sunday May 22nd) for a heli only funfly.

This event will be a low key good old time get together enjoying our
beautiful flying field.

Lunch will consist of grilled hot dogs, brats, burgers and beverages.

We will be operating a transmitter impound and requiring AMA membership.

There will be no fees associated with this get together. Lunch for pilots
will be provided gratis for attendance!

We will be operating two flight lines (one on the North/South runway, the
other on the East/West runway) with two pilot stations per flight line.
No matter where the sun is, you can have a comfortable place to fly!

The funfly starts at 9am with a pilot meeting at 10am (to cover field
rules etc). If you desire to fly prior to the 10am pilot meeting, we ask
that you follow the posted field rules and monitor the frequency board.

Directions to the field can be found at the following club web site link:
http://www.marionrcflyers.org/Directions.php

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know!
Regards,
Jake Wegman

I'll see if I can be there, however that all depends on when I have to leave town.

What are the chances of me getting permision to land at the Private stip? If I could fly down, it would make life soooooooooo much easier.

I haven't walked the strip this year to look for any new critter holes. I'll do that this week and post a reply.

With regard to permission, feel free. What airplane? Depending on attendance, you can park in front of the hangar. We often have someone fly in to our funflys!

We ask that you circle the field three times to give anyone airborn with a model adequate time to clear the field.

Have you flown into the field before? When approaching from the west, look out for the power line (marked by an orange ball in the middle of the line) at the approach end. And of course keep and eye out for towers - I don't recal any being in the approach path, but keep your dilligence! It's been two years since I've landed at the field as the Long-ez isn't a grass runway airplane...

Regards,
Jake

Sounds great!

I havn't flown in there before, so I'll circle a few times anyhow just to take a good look. I'll be the guy in a Red / White 182, should be easy to spot.

As far as you not being in there in two years... sounds like its time to start building an RV!

GREAT CHOICE!

I was dead set on building an 8, then I flew a Rocket.... The Rocket won. Now if we can just get the new hangar built so I have someplace to build again.

Any idea on how many people will be there?

I have a friend in Dodge Centre with a Harmon Rocket (300HP in an rv-4 airframe, I can only imagine the smile on his face) - I haven't had the pleasure to fly in it yet... His 180HP O320 rv-4 was an absolute blast to fly.

I'm anticipating up to a dozen pilots and perhaps another dozen spectators. We
should have enough food for 50 people.

Jake

Nick, I had the chance to walk the east half of the grass strip (2,800ft long running East-West total strip length). There are five critter holes starting approx 23 paces to 80 paces from the east end mostly on the south edge - one six inches dia in the center, 80 paces out - the other four are on the south side. If you approach from the East, aim to touch down 240-300ft from the east end and you will not encounter any of the critter holes.

I haven't walked the West end yet and plan to do so tomorrow. There have been critter holes on the West end in the past years. However due to the West end crossing power line, you will never touch down within the first 300-500ft of the west end.

Jake looks like the weather is going to be better than it was last weekend. I heard people at the SPRC fun fly say they were going to be coming out. It should be a good time.

Howdy fellas, I'm just posting to let you all know that we have NOT canceled the event and unless it's raining tomorrow morning (Sat), the fun fly is still ON! If tomorrow morning it's forcasting rain throughout the morning, then the Sunday raindate will be in effect.

The fun fly concluded successfully today at 6:30pm. After the late start due to a morning shower, it cleared up pretty darn well and I myself had five good flights on the Rap50!

I'm grateful that we were able to show some of the local club members what a fantastic group of heli fliers we have in the area!

All of us from the Marion RC Flyers of Rochester would like to thank everyone who came out and ate our food

We have a couple more 'fun flys' scheduled this year (combo airplane/heli) that we'd like to extend open invitations for. (Details can be found on http://www.marionrcflyers.org)

So, with that said, our eyes are looking towards next year (later in the season) for another heli only gathering! I'll be soliciting thoughts on dates and anything else that we can do for another addition to a great line up of regional fun flys!

Thanks again Fellas,
Jake Wegman

It rained from 9:30 until about noon, but Jake and the guys from Marion RC Flyers cooked free brauts and chips, and had free sodas for all that showed while we waited for the rain to quit. There were some good pilots and a few like me that are just gettting into heli's.Everyone there was friendly and more than helpful to guys that need ajustments and carb tuning. Expecially Andy ( sorry Andy I forgot your last name) , he tuned serveral engines and helped fine tune at least two others heli's rotor tracking. Thanks again guys, DOC

I was pretty bummed out I couldn't make it down. Between being at least a day behind on this Cessna 421 I'm working on and marginal weather, it just wasn't in the cards.

I'll keep an eye on upcoming events and definitly plan on makeing a trip down for the next one!
