With 40 to 50 flights on my CS I had an 8411 fail on the CCPM, now I
have no confidence in the other two. I figured up quickly over 500+
dollars to get it back in the air. I'm calling JR tomorrow to see
what they can do. My problem is the same it seems as Jim Stark had. I
opened up the servo and the gears are perfect, the motor seems to
have a problem. I lost control after leveling off from a mild bank
turn and the heli would then just roll as I added a subtracted
collective. I got it down to about 10 feet and it rolled one more
time and went in. I was the first to speak up and defend the 8411's
thinking binding issues were killing them. My setup had NO binding;
the servo was not even being stressed when it failed. JR has always
had good customer service, now I get to see just how well. I'll keep
you guys posted.

Update
I called Horizon this morning and they came though for me with flying colors. The rep told me to send in the servo and a list of damaged parts and they would replace them all free of charge. Under the circumstances I can't think of it being better than that. Once again I have to say I have never had a bad experience with Horizon, they have always went above and beyond for me.

Horizon has always been really good, and in this case it's clear they went well above and beyond the call of duty. That goes a long way to keep customers loyal. Lucky you.

Rick,
Glad to hear things are going to be sorted, good of Horizon to take care of business.

Hope that Vigor is back in the air soon!

How's the little IMZ?

I was somewhat shocked when the rep at Horizon told me to just send a list of damaged parts along with the suspected servo and did not ask to have the heli sent to them for an exam. Made it much easier and faster to get the CS back in the air, The IMZ Si is still as smooth as ever. I flies so well. I do have to look at why it will not roll in a straight line like my other helis. It tends to want to drop the tail. I need to look at the CG again. I have just over a gallon of fuel through it. I'm probably just not use to it I was thinking.

Rickc, that really doesnt suprise me their going to take care of you like that, especially when your using their Jr servos and flying the JR heli, sounds like your a good customer to them, "it easier to maintain a customer, than to get him back as a customer", so its just smart business. Daz...

I sent the list off yesterday (27 part #'s) along wiith the bad servo, I'm sure they will stand behind the problem as they told me. I called the rep again at Horizon and stated I lost confidence in the other two 8411's on the CCPM since they were all purchaced at the same time even though they are still working properly. The rep told me to send in the other two 8411's also and they would replace all three. I requested the new 8411SA's, he said "No Problem" They are even going to give me credit for the items they do not sell like my V-Blades and my MS tail blades. I'm very impressed with Horizon. Once again I was reminded why I fly JR. I'll go ahead a post the damage list below.

8411
Guys,

I have the same situation with horizon years ago with the problems of the 8417......they replaced my 2 servos great service..... now the problem is that I have 12 of 8411...... I never had a problem with the 8411..... but do I trust them???? that is the question. I talk with managers at Horizon saying that there is no problem with the 8411???
what do you guys think?

Regards,

Gonzalo

Seems as though there was only a few defective ones, at least if you do have a problem, and they see you had one of the defective ones they will replace your equip, but thats not guaranteed, legally all they have to replace is the servo, but seems as though they have been kind hearted with a few. So I wouldnt count on them replacing your equip. thats a shot in the dark. However, what I think I would do is talk to Horizon, and let them know you want to send them in for inspection b4 installing in your Heli, just to have that sense of security. It would probably only cost you the amount of shipping. Daz...

Latest Update
Horizon shipped me all my parts with no problems at all. The customer service was so good I was a bit shocked. I spoke to two different reps and both were very helpfull and truely concerned about getting me back in the air. My 8411 died unlike the others I heard about. Some pilots were spinning the pinion gear loose on the armature shaft. In my case my motor just died. No buzzing, or no movement at all. Horizon just put about 600 bucks in my pocket by standing behind their products. Thanks Horizon!

Hi Conrod, I guess there is no pattern just a roll on the dice. My 8231's are still going strong with a second owner. I wish they had a device to measure a go or no go with servos prior to flight.

Alright Guys,

I had an 8411SA fail in flight the other day on my Raptor .50 Just doing a little work on my throttle curves and it did a quick roll to the right, a quick roll to the left and I hit throttle hold and it hit the ground on its' side... and sat there idling. I could hear the roll servo grinding away and thought at first I had stripped the (plastic) gears in the crash. A closer look and it was the motor that failed. The gears were fine. The servo had about a two gallons of fuel through it.

I called Horizon and they said they are seeing a higher failure rate on the digitals. They said that the source of the problem is their very tight gear train and near-zero dead band and the solution was to mount them looser in the grommets to introduce some play.:-((( I guess a lot of "control" vibration it getting sent directly to the servo motor. With this in mind I went out to look and my heli. I found that while the controls didn't bind, the servos didn't buz at idle, there was NO slop. Further, I found that my swash plate (a Quick UK unit) was a little tight in spots around the ball and may have been working on the servo some.

I replaced the damaged servo AND the pitch and collective servo. Thing is, the only servos I had on hand were 3 NEW 8411's! I've got 2 helis with 8(!) ($800.00USD!) of these servo's and can't affort to go out and buy 8 new Futabas right now.

I want to go flying today but I spend the entire time expecting the thing to take off over the horizon with a failed servo.

I need to here some good stories about these servo's. I need someone to tell me there are 296 of them in their club, some with 500 hours on 'em, and none have failed. I need someone to tell me they have 8 of them in two heli's with 150 gallons of fuel through each and so far so good. I flew a 1/2 gallon through my X-Cell yesterday and didn't have a problem. Did I get lucky and am a flight away from some disaster or should I expect another 100 hours of trouble free flying?

As a side note Horizon did NOT ask for a list of broken parts to my Raptor so they could replace them!

You know, the first thing I want in a servo is reliability. Everything after that is gravy. This zero dead band is great right up to the point it it hits the ground and the parts start flying.

Your respectfully, and stuck in heli hell,
Bill

SERVOS
if you feel uncomfortable with them call Horizon and ask to send them all in for testing and replacements. You will never know till they have done that. is cheeper price. while your not flying help some one else
i had a new one that made noise. i slaped a 517 in while i was waiting.
I practiced landings. The things i didnt do when i should have.. was happy when the servo was given a clean bill of health. Burn fuel
