Which one is better? I know the 502 comes with the screen and some functions i will probably never use. I also heard a while back that the 502 piro rate was slow compared to the 401. which one would you use.

502!
I had a 401 and used it for a while. It started acting up, so I changed to the 502. Way Better! The piro's are much faster and you have a lot more setup options with the 502 as opposed to the 401. I would have bought the 502 first had I known. Also, there's a rumor going around that, if you add the servo from the 601 and get into the 502 program, it changes the 502 to a 601 some how. Cool Huh? Just my .02.

If you don't care about tweaking the gyro, get another 401. A 502 in box stock form will not do better since they both use the 9253 rudder servo. Only the 601 will have better performance even if you don't tweak the gyro.

Dave_D is right on...
I have both the 401 and the 502. The 502 has the amp. which lets you fine tune features such as:

Easy to program servo throw endpoints and center position.
Low battery alarm.
ATV limiting on rudder control.
Gain tracking (adjustable).
Rudder gain control.
Servo frame rate.
Adjustable gain from your transmitter (two position gain).
(0-100% remote gain adjustment)
Rudder stick delay.
Gyro reverse.
Easy to read LCD aids in easy set-ups.

All of these can be adjusted on the Micro processor control unit.

The 502 also has:
Patented, 100% solid state anti-vibration design, with built-in temperature and drift compensation.

The 502 has the abilitiy to fine tune most of the 401 features.

In my opinion the 502 is a 401 in a 601 case....if that makes sense
The 601 is the best hands down.

I think both gyros right out of the box perform the same...until you fine tune some of the features on the 502. If your going to upgrade gyro's my opinion is wait and save enough cash to get the 601 system.

501-601
You cannot convert the 502 to 601. The menu's have differences, and the 502 Frame rate is slower then the 601 regrdless of the servo.

Scott, nobody is talking about the 501.

They're talking about the 502. I understand there are at least some minor differences.

That said, I'm still not convinced about this "transformation" myself, would someone like to give more input?

My bad.. I meant 502 to 601.. They have the same amplifier externally, but the program internally is different and there is no way to program them the same without being able to re-program the the chip that controls and give the functionality to the amp.

Best regards,
Scott

Gyro Conversion
Is there any chance I can plug a special servo into my G-154 and turn it into a GY-601? -Steve

WOW!
Man, you can't post anything here without getting gouged. The statement that I made about the 502 to 601 conversion was only stated as a word of mouth thing. I was told by someone on this site, that if you had the 502, bought the digital servo that goes with the 601, and went in to a secret programming menu on the 502 amp, you could convert it to the 601. They stated that the were essentially the same gyros, identical looking if you have them side by side, other than the writing on them. I don't know this to be fact or not. Then you get the: Can I use my out of date gyro with the 601 servo and convert it to the 601 posts. Why? There really is no need for that ripping everybody apart stuff, escpecially in this hobby. Who knows, it might work and thats a bonus. Or, it won't work and you have the servo for a 601 now. Oh well, I'm sure this will get ripped apart too, for spelling or some punctuation error.

If people that answered here don't know why a 502 is way FAR FAR FAR superior to a 401 it's because they probably don't need one yet.

If you don't care either way get the 502. It'll be like getting a top-of-the-line radio before you need it. You might not need the features yet but once you start needing them you'll be happy that you got one.
