I just upgraded my expert to a YS80. I made the gear change to 8.45:1. I installed the long main shaft and extra bearing along with the double bearing on top. I have a slight drift now in the tail. I assume it is the different gearing and I'm still swinging 680s. I still have the stock blades on the tail. What would you recommend?

I talked to Todd Bennett the other day and asked him what blades I should run with my OS 91-Fury Extreme.

MA says you can run 110 tail blades with 710 mains and 105 blades with 720's. So I asked Todd what he thought about running 710/110 sets.

He told me NOT to run 110 tail blades, the 105's work great and don't load up the tail like the 110's can.

He likes the double taper MA 710s but said the 700's work great too.

I just purchased a set of RotorSport 700mm white carbon blades and I plan on running NHP 105 tail blades.

I plan on running a governor on this heli to keep my headspeed constant, I suspect with smaller blades it can overspeed quite easily with a 91 engine pulling it.

Scott, what was the size of your "stock" tail blades?

Tail Blades
If you still have the standard tail boom that came with your 60 Expert kit, and have 680mm mains, you can run 105s. The gentlemen before me stating 700-710 mains with 105-110 tail is using the longer extreme boom. I fly 700's w/ 101mm tail blades. NHPs work EXCELLENT! You will notice a huge difference in the tail from the stock plastic ones when moving to the NHPs if this is the route you decide to take.

Enjoy!

I Just took a measurement and the stock plastic tail blades are about 103 mm give or take a mm.

With my 91 powered CT, I just run SAB 680s and NHP105s with the normal boom and it works great. Pyros are very strong abd fast.

Tail Drift
Back to your original post, changing the motor won't make the taill drift unless your rotor head speed has changed. I'll bet if you tach it, the rotor speed is not what you were running before. With the 80's and 90 gear ratio, 1700 RPM sounds a lot "slower" than the same rotor speed with 9:1 gearing.

For most of us, 100-105 mm blades work great. I've yet to stall mine out (105 MM), so I agree that I'm not sure most of us need 110 blades quite yet.

Wayne, do you think I might be overdriving the tail then???
It sounds like the headspeed is a little low, 1600s or so. JRG5000t in heading hold mode. Although it does lock in nice when I flip to Idle up.
100 or so RPM more than normal, by ear.
