List some of the things you have done homemade, to save those 15+ dollars, a trip to the store, wait for mail order, time, etc.

I just made a flybar lock for my shuttle ZXX. I used two alligator clips and a wire. It isn't the exact length, in fact, about .5" too long, so you just don't clip it at 90deg exactly at the frame/flybar. Works very well. I can finally get real good pitch readings.

I also soldered the spots where my 2 pcs of wire come together, and where the alligator clips touch the wire. Very strong and works well.

What are some of your homemade things?

I've made a rudder pushrod out of a wire coathanger. I've also used two liter plastic cold drink bottles to replace broken windshields.

No job so lots of stuff...
Let's see...

T/R servo boom mount - out of 1/8" plywood
header tank (actually the bracket + $2 tank) - out of 1/8" plywood
frame brace - old tail boom support (was trying to find vibration)
ball link adjustment tool - screwdriver type thing
flybar lock - old flybar and some misc parts and clamp
flight box - misc plywood and switches and such
battery load - resistor (for bench checking)
pack cycler - auto bulbs (to drain pack fully, monitor it with DMM)
engine - bailing wire, old coffee can, McDonalds straw, cork (ok, just kidding now)

Prolly some other things. I get bored ya know!

Nothing too it really...

Basically, I put a few auto tail light bulbs mounted to a box (soldered wires to bulbs) and wired to some terminals. Tied all the grounds together and I can jumper between the terminals to add more or less load (~300ma to ~2 amp). I found the single element bulbs for regular tail lights seem to have about 300ma load, while the brake light element in a duel element bulb give me about a one amp load. Of course, this varies slightly with pack voltage. I usually drain the pack with about a 1 amp load. Use a multimeter to monitor the voltage so you don't over drain the pack. I usually run mine down to about 4.5 or so and they seem to take nice consistant charges.

If I were to do it again, which I probably will at some point, I would probably just use the one bulb giving me ~1 amp load.
