The topic pretty much speaks for itself. I always see fiberglass canopies with gel coating. Is this a specialized paint, or what? Can it be painted on top of? The Voyager IMZ's canopy is fiberglass, very thin, and finished a glossy white...is it likely gel-coated?

it's a splash coat of epoxy or polyester resin that goes into the mold before the glass is laid up to give the canopy a durable finish with no glass fibers showing through. you can brush it over a resin finish but i think the reason it adheres to its undercoat is that the glass is laid up when the gel coat is in the gel stage and not completely cured yet. it sounds like your canopy has a gel coat.

Gel Coat...
When you make fiberglass parts from molds most people will coat the mold with a pigmented polyester resin (colored gelcoat) or epoxy. It is left there until it "gels." After gel state has been reached they will then lay up the mold with fiberglass and polyester resin or epoxy. The gelcoat eliminates pinholes on the surface. It will decrease the paint prep time. To paint all you need to do is sand the gloss off, fill any voids and primer. Use automotive paints so the high nitro won't eat at the paint. There were some good topics posted previously on how to paint. Good luck!

something white, or resin pigmented with another color - goopy stuff that dries into glass objects, shaped coats of something glassy with smoothed surfaces on one side .. goops
