The first version of the 9Z can be converted to the 9ZWC (first version). This must be done at the Futaba service center at Hobbico and requires a hardware change. Neither the first version 9ZWC or the original 9Z can be converted to the 9ZWC2.

the truth is that they can be converted, but futaba does not want to loose the sales of WC2. thus no conversion is offered at least at this time.

anyway... NO usb port on 9Z

Off topic but raised my interest. What was the difference between the original 9Z and 9ZWC. Are the cases the same (golden in color) and what is the best way to tell the difference? Or is it way obvious?

Original 9Z
So the original 9Z did not have a Gyro program? Was it done through mixes? And the red label you mean the one that is blue on the WCII is red of the WC1? I am guessing the Gyro menu woudl be under the CND menu?

Thank you I have been curious for a long time is a WC and WC1 existed. I knew there was a model before the WCII but didn't know there were two versions of it. With everything said about increased stick res around center I would really like to see the defference between a WC II and a WC on CCPM?

9Z Physical Differences
I have a pic of all three radios, they are cropped down so you only see the buttons around the display. They are unique to each version of the 9Z and make them easy to identify at a glance.

I recall AMC once posted on the 9Z user group that it would cost around $400.00-$500.00 to upgrade a 9Z to a WC but you can't upgrade either to the WC2. Best bet is to sell your older radio and get a new one.

9Z to WC1
I had Futaba of America upgrade my original 9Z (circa 1993) to WC1 firmware. It cost me $500 and provided some limited additional functionality for helis. It made me wish that I had bought an Airtronics Stylus with upgradeable firmware on a card. Oh yeah, the Airtronics Stylus has a higher frame rate in PCM than the 9Z. All in all the Stylus is a pretty good radio for the money.

All three visions have virtually identical hardware. If you open all three of them and compare their PCBs you will see that there are minor differences between the original 9Z and the WC. Mainly a few components relocated, but wiring still seems to be the same. However the PCBs from WC and WC2 have no difference at all. The two radios have only different firmware.s

The firmware is split to two chips. Some of it resides within the microcontroller that performs all functions of the 9Z and the bigger part is located at an external ROM chip. It is very easy to read and copy the external ROM chip, however the microcontroller will be most likely locked which makes extraction of the firmware impossible.

Having a copy of the firmware would cost someone less than US$30 for the upgrade (the cost of the two chips).

The US$500 that Futaba charges for the upgrade possibly reflect the profit of the lost sale due to the upgrade. Also it may be the case that the Japanese manufacturer does not provide single chips to them, but complete PCBs which would slightly increase their expenses. US$500 is any case ridiculous; you can buy a whole PC at this price with much more electronic components and technology.

The 3 position switches on the WC2 is nothing new. The WC radio can do this just fine (see my website for details). The only difference between the two radios is the “accelerated frame rate”. The firmware is simply updated so that it sends more frequent updates to the primary channels while other less important channels (gyro gain for example) receive fewer. It is not much harm anyway if the gyro gain changes 1/4 of second after you flicker the switch.

You can add the three position switches to the original 9Z or the WC. When I bought my used 9Z I send it to Futaba for an overhaul. To fix a broken wire, install 3 position switches everywhere, update the software for the switches, recal the sticks, recal the meter, recal the tach and retune the RF module it came to a total of U$80 shipped and less than 2 weeks.

I agree that U$500 for a firmware upgrade is a joke. Somebody was playing on the 'gotta have the latest and greatest' obsession heli flyers seem to have.
How about it Angelos, got time to reengineer the WC2 code and sell the chips? :-)

Same Obsession
Actually I was flying pattern at the time .... same "latest and greatest" obsession, different models. The funny thing is that I went through the annual "new model tax" that YS levied on pattern fliers as I went through the YS -AC, SC, 140 FZ, L and now DZ. It seems with the announcement of the upcoming YS 91 for helis I am right back into the same thing. The manufacturers have to keep pumping those new models out.
