This weekend I almost lost my fury. Seriously came close to stuffing it big time. It all started when I went into 3D mode and at the top of a loop, feeding in negative, the machine started to roll hard-over to the right. Not good. Thinking that I was having radio problems I started to make a mayday call to the pits because I did not know where the machine was going to end up. As I added power and climed away from the pit area I felt like I had some control over the machine but was unwilling to take any chances so I hit the hold switch to settle the engine down and stop any radio noise if that was the source. No good. As soon as I came down with the collective the machine would roll hard over to the right and blade speed would really die off. So, back out of hold and climb out, feeling like I have some control. Hit hold again (I did not want it smoking into the ground wide open) and the same thing, hard over right and blade speed went away. By now I am starting to see a pattern. Above half stick I had control, below half stick I did not. Ok, I get her pointed into the wind, hit hold and leave collective at the half stick position. Float down untill head speed decays. Out of hold, still at half stick, rotor speed comes back up. Hit hold, float down a little futher. And so on untill I get her all the way down in one piece!
What did I find that caused all the trouble? A bad servo you say??? NOPE! What had happened is when I instaled the canopy I did not get the rubber canopy guide onto the top of the frames properly so the canopy was sitting over to the right. This little mis-alignment was all that was needed to allow the left swashplate link to bind on the canopy and not allow that side of the swash plate to drop when negitive was added. This is what was causing the right hand roll when I got below half stick! My canopy now has a nice half moon cutout in this area so it will not happen again!
Bottom line: MAKE DANG SURE YOUR CANOPY IS INSTALLED PROPERLY!
Like the guys at the field said " Hey you got yourself a new fury....and it looks just like the old one!" I would rather just buy a new fury, saving them from certian destruction is too much work!
Fury Fliers, please take notice of you canopy guide as required.
