Just wondered if it makes any difference leaving the motor wires unplugged, or if the ESC needs to sense it hooked up when programming with the USB link? I know there is a safety built in, just makes me worry about blades whacking you while plugging the battery in.

Doesn't matter. I've done it both ways with identical results. Just be sure to unplug the motor battery!

Unless you cut the red wire at the servo plug, you shouldn't need a battery plugged in while using the USB programmer. It can draw power through the USB port instead.

Iv tried just plugging the USB to the ESC with no battery power thinking the USB would supply enough power, but It will not show my ESC is hooked up (green) until I plug power to it. boy oh boy these things can drive you nuts!

Does the red light on the ESC light up when you plug it in? Sometimes I have to plug and unplug it a couple of times before the programmer will "see" it.

Did you clip the red wire on the ESC lead to disable the BEC? If so, you'll need battery power to use the PHX Link.

Ya, I pulled the power wire out and shrink wrapped the tip so I could run the separate BEC. I guess that esplains why I need battery power, I think the red light only comes on when I plug the battery together.

There ya go! If you don't want to have the motor battery plugged in, you'll need to reconnect the red BEC wire.

If you choose to leave it as is, I would then recommend unplugging the motor for safety.

Or do what I do and make up a short (less than 1 inch) extension lead with just the ground and signal wire in it and not the red wire. Plug that into the receiver and plug the ESC in the other end. Isolates the BEC, but lets you still program the ESC using the USB without needing a battery.

I hope these pictures explain it better:
