Hi all,
Flying with the Voyager 50 today, everything was sweet.
All of a sudden at about 45 feet, we see something fall off the heli after hitting the tail blades and breaking to pieces.
I hit hold and auto'ed in.
It turns out that it was the vertical fin.
Hmmmm. I know I locktited that thing down.
BTW, I am using the HG tail case for JR helis.
SO anyway, I check everything out and decide that I need to fly more, so I refuel and take he up again without a tail fin.
Two tanks in, all of a sudden I lose tail and have to hit hold again to drop safely.
This time, the double bb pitch control mech. had literally stripped out of the HG tail gear case.
That was it for the day.

NOW, all I can figure is that I have some sort of high frequency vibration in the tail that caused these two failures.
Before I do complete post mort, what do you guys think I should look for? What's the most likely cause for this type of vibration?
I'll have a bit of time tomorrow to sort through things.

Thanks!
Chris

I agree with Chuck. I had the same problem with my Voyager (also had the aluminum tail case). I used to get a very high frequency vibration seen in the lower part of the vertical fin. If you listened carefully, you could actualy hear a slight hum. Although I couldn't fin anything wrong with the original output shaft, the problem seemed to go away once I switched to the high grade tail output shaft.

Thanks Yardy and all,
I think that I am going to ditch the HG tail case for now.
I will go back to the plastic for some dampening effect and install a new tail output shaft.
......arghhhhh. Tapping that little pin out of the pulley is a pain in the A$$.
If I can get the shakes worked out, I am going to invest in the NEW KS984 tail gear case ($130) OUCH!
It is more robust and will transfer directly to the IMZ (thanks Yardy) OR the Sylphide should I scrap the Voyager program.

Jeff (aka jetsurgeon) noted a few weekends ago that same "buzzing" effect was coming from the carbon tail fin.
I just masked the problem by putting the plastic fin on. The buzzing went away but the high freq. vibration was obviously still there.
I will post follow up and success/failure report as data becomes available.

Thanks,
Chris

PS Yardy: do you know what the stock # is for the HG tail output shaft?

I've seen this type of vibration, and it was caused by an out of balance fan hub assembly.

Chris,

I dont have the part number handy, but it was supplied with the IMZ kit and therefore should be listed in the manual. If you cant find it I should have a few at home. I'll check the part number and forward it to you.

I find it very hard to totally eliminate the vertical fin from shaking. i use very very flexible fiberglass fins, and they used to vibrate from one side to another so hard i thought they would either snap off or hit the tail blades.
If you cant solve the problem, we do one thing in our area to help out. if you check out the Vigor i have in my gallery, i actually used a spare piece of carbon tubing to rienforce the fin. i just cut it to length, and used a dremel cut-off tool to cut a slit the entire length down one side.
snap it onto the leading edge of the fin and used 30-minute epoxy to secure it in place. it doesn't look too bad, and has totally stopped the tail fin from shaking.

Hehehehe,
That's my tail!
I will try that trick with the CF tubing as soon as I do a few things that were recommended:
New HG tail output shaft
Check runout on fan assembly/clutch

Thanks for the tip!
