LOL,,, so I saw a TV commercial on the History channel about Alexander the Great, and they said "dumb ass", they said something to the liking of "he was no dumb ass" LOL on a TV commercial LOL,,, I know I know some would say this is not swearing, but would you let your 8 year old run around saying "dumb ass",,, I wonder how long before they start saying harder words in TV commercials.

It is a cycle Adults teach the children, then children become
adults and teach the children

Raptor-30-V2,,, here in the US most adults don't like to here a smart mouth "child" running around swearing, it has most to do with respect and al-around niceness and kindness to others,,, if the kid that lives down the street from me comes to my house and starts saying F-this and F-that or dumb ass this and you dumb ass or C.S. this or your a C.S. al in front of my 12 year old daughter and wife "it shows NO respect !!",,, can your open minded mind understand that ?

I tell you this, no kid will come in my house and talk like that, and the goes for adults too, you start talking like that in front of my wife and kids you going to get thrown out on your ear, and not only that, in the US it's aganst the law to swear in front of women and children !!

another good word to use is "decency".

What exactly is the point of making groups of letters taboo therefore enticing children to use them to act more grown up?

I do agree with you Jim that swearing in front of others, regardless of age or gender is disrespectful but to make a big deal out of it is what encourges children to use them in the first place.

Personally, telling me that you want to "shove a broomstick up my rectum" is just as offensive as anything you can say using a swear word without one unacceptable word in the sentence. Its just that we have glamorised these words we call "swearing" and as adults we admire thier use. Our entertainment is loaded with them.

Today's children are flocking out and in record numbers purchasing Rap music full of vulgar language that they learned at home from parents who kept reminding them how naughty they were to use.

Record Execs know this well. The warning label regarding offensive material is an marketing ploy that results in that album outselling the one along side of it that does not contain the warning. Protecting consumers has nothing to do with it, if it did then you would have to show ID to get an R or X rated CD just like you do for booze and cigerettes.

"it shows NO respect !!"
Not only that, but when an adult speaks that way, it shows an extreme lack of intelligence and self-control. I mean have we become so lazy in our speech that we cant think of other ways to express feelings other than add a F$#@ or S%^& to a sentence?

How many of us would speak that way in MOST job interviews? And if we did, would we be surprised when the job was offered to someone else?

And I agree that we as adults should not speak that way in front of children, because we are whom they learn their way of life from.

Here is a piece of advice, free, to all the world's parents: BE A PARENT!!! Don't let others do your job for you. Stick around in your kid's lives. Don't impregnate some girl and then run off when you hear she is pregnant, be a MAN and be in that kids life as much as you can.

And lastly, dont let your kids run your life, be the guiding influence in theirs. By setting a proper example, you have already done 50% of the work of parenting.

American TV is funny in weird ways.
It's OK to show:
Dismemberment
Shootings
Rape
Burning/flaying/buried alive

It's a media frenzy and big fines if one sees/hears:
A nipple covered with jewelry
A interviewee saying $hit or f*ck
A little butt cleavage

Sometimes I think TV people here are a few channels short of a full lineup.

Hmmm. I see your point but don't see a problem with being "Lazy" in your speach. The point of speech is communication. Sure, some people writing poetry and fiction are using the written word as art but in general, speech is meant to communicate ideas from one person to another. I would think being efficient in this regard would be encouraged. Less lofty explination and more direct labeling if you know what I mean.

I mean, most kids don't consider felatio a swear word, do adults? What exactly is the difference between a felatio artist and a CS?

When you use the word "dick" are you swearing? all depends: "See Dick Run" isn't a swear, "you know dick about Heli's" isn't either even if it is insulting. Add "suck my" in front of it though and all of a sudden the letters D, I, C and K in that order become a punishable offence.

Our Brit friends may want to go for a smoke break if you yelled fag at them. How would the same statement be taken in america? So does swearing have to be location specific? Perhaps.

If someone swears at you in another language. Does it count or do you have to understand the word before it becomes bad? For that matter are there direct translations for english swear words or is F**K pretty much universal?

My point here is that unless we teach our children the words, and then explain to them they are bad, they would have a hard time figuering out which ones are bad words at all. There is no single identifer on what makes a word a swear.

So, if we simply watched our mouths for one generation, all swearing would dry up. We are not going to fix the problem by outlawing letter grouping combinations. We have to remove the glamor of cursing by simply allowing it and not reacting to it. It will fall out of fasion all on it's own after that.

discipline

another good word is discipline,,, to many kids today have not had discipline in their young life, and it shows up in school on the streets and in other peoples homes,,,

I know a single mother who is now having BIG trouble with her son, she has NEVER made her son do anything around her house, he is 15 now and he has never once cleaned his room, his mother does it, he has never been made to clean or pick up anything, she even cut his meat for him and brings him his drinks, and now he is pushing her around and swearing at her, but when that kid comes to my house he doesn't act like that, and when he comes to my house he doesn't put on his black fingernail polish,,, this kid got so bad his mother had to have the state put him in a foster home, he is now home with his mother and he is trying to act like a human-being,,,

I know another single mom that just found-out that her 17 year old son is having sex, so she tried to talk to him about it and he said "it's my bizz, if you ask again I will pack up and run away",,, all this woman has done for this kid and he talks to her like that,,,

I was at a party at another friends house, and this one kid was climbing all over the counters TV stand and stereo stand, he was out of control and the parents did/said nothing to the kid, finely when the kid climbed on top of the refrigerator the owner of the house went over to the kid and yeld in his ear get off my frig and don't climb on my stuff any more, the kid now shows respect in that house,,,

I know a nother 17 year old (on licensed) kid that did not show respect and stoled his mothers car, and he died in that car when he hit a tree,,, it was my brother !!

I could go on and on, but I'm sure we all could.

You americans are yust as muslims; You got your verry own 'strange' moral/law rules and culture...
Whats the big deal about swearing? Its yust as any other words and its nothing wrong by using them...? I undesratnd that 'old' people find it hard to get used to swearing, becuase you are not used with it, but the new generasion is using it as day-day language, its normal! (At least here in Norway)
