hey guys, i got a call today from writer for the st. petersburg times, a large daily paper. they somehow got the word that i took some aerial shots of an outrigger canoe race and were interested in seeing the pics and purchasing one or two.

ive never done business with a newspaper and am not sure what to charge. he asked me what i would charge and i said its negotable.

i usually ask 200 for going to a place to take custom shots but these are pics that are already taken....

anyone ever sell to papers?

thanks
dan

I treat this situation like any other paying job, whether or not you took the pictures on there request does not matter. Thats great that you can take pictures for "fun" and then turn a profit on them. Nice when you don't count on the business and get it after the fact is'nt it!

yes i sure was pleasantly surprised to get the call from the paper. I must admit though i was there hoping to sell a few, after the fact, to the canoeing teams.....so far no luck but it was just a few days ago....

Hey Danno

I used to live in Clearwater FL and recently moved to NC. I hope you have a nice big AC in your boat

Is there a chance you can now cultivate a really good relationship with the St. Pete times and do tons of other work for them?, make the most of the contact you have and get some photo shoots in the future all lined up. The pics you send to the paper is what helps them sell their newspaper so price the pics high, you can always come down but you cannot go up in price.

Hey Dan, you could check some stock photography sites to see what they charge for just the image or a combination of images.
