There were a total five different helicopters that depicted T. C.’s helicopter:
N58243 - S1
N1095A - S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6
N4943T - S6, S7
and possibly
N9267F (500C with fake registration as N58243)

Here is the sad video of N4943T’s crash.

Luckily the pilot Steve Kux, whom flew a LOT on Magnum PI, survived because “Tiny” lifted the helicopter up.

N4943T used on Magnum P.I.

N4943T crashed Friday the 13th, in May 1988, a week after Magnum P.I. ended the filming of its last season.
Note its tail number, N4943T, and white window vent on its back door, confirm it was used on Magnum P.I.
Luckily Steve Kux, whom flew a lot on the show, survived, although he had to quit flying because his left arm was so badly injured.

This 500C had the fake registration number of N58243, which was the registration number of the 500D that crashed into the ocean, in 1981.

Since CBS revamped Magnum P.I., it seems appropriate to revamp some life back into this post!

There are new Island Hopper Choppers buzzing around Hawaii now.

Hence; modelers will want to start building rc model’s of T.C.’s iconic Island Hopper 500D helicopter.

So, this post is still very relevant.

Hi Kmj1966,

These posts are interesting to read. But unfortunately there is often times incorrect information or rumors that are shared, that mislead people whom read it.

I am sorry Kmj1966, but some of your information in your post, and other members’ posts that were shared contain incorrect information.

For starters, there were NOT 4 crashes on Magnum P.I.!

That is ridiculous!

There were ONLY 4 helicopters used altogether!

If that was true, then they not only would have ran out of helicopters, but the FAA and NTSB would have shut them down!

There was ONLY 1 crash, in Magnum P.I.’s 8 seasons!

That crash was, N58243 in 1980, into the ocean as your post correctly stated, due to pilot error.

Then one week after Magnum P.I. ended, N4943T crashed into the drainage ditch 13, May 1988, seriously injuring Magnum pilot, Steve Kux.

There were never any mid air collisions as you stated.

Also, N1095A did NOT crash as you presumed. As a matter of fact it is still flying today, with Air 2.

Its airworthiness certificate is good until June 2021.

You stated that you thought it had crashed simply because an airplane now has its old registration number, N1095A!

But the truth is it was simply sold, and the new owners changed its registration number.

As a matter of fact N1095A has had six different registration numbers over the years, in addition to its original N1095A.

N1095A is now registered as N717MA.

It is being used by AIR 2, to do powerline repair/work.
