I have the XP652--it's predecessor. I looked at the specs for the 662 and I see they've made some nice, but not fundamental changes. With the 652, there are three features that limit how far you'll be able to take it. 3 point throttle curves, 6 channels only, and no expo on the left stick. It also has 3 point pitch curves, but that's not as big a limit as lack of expo.

I work around the throttle curve by using a GV-1 governor with it. This keeps the engine from bogging down or racing at zero pitch with throttle and pitch curve of 100-something in the middle-100. It's tough to get the right throttle level in the middle with three points. Since it only has 6 channels I have the governor set to on/off with the stick (there's not an open receiver channel and switch to turn it on/off from the receiver/transmitter.) This makes the throttle hold switch not particularly useful--since the governor will be controlling the throttle whether or not the throttle hold switch is hit. (Anyone--am I missing something on this? Can the throttle hold be the on/off switch for the governor? Seems unlikely since the switch doesn't control a receiver channel.)

Working around the lack of expo on the collective/rudder isn't a real big deal.

So all that said, if this is the way you can afford a good set-up--go for it, but know it's limits. I use it regularly, but also have an 8103 as my main radio.

Was thinking about it, but...

I was considering the 662, but after talking to the guys at the local field, I decided to go with the 8103. Yeah I know its about $150 more, but its got 5 point pitch curves (as opposed to 3 on the 662) and the extra channels. I dont plan on buying another radio when I want to grow a little (read: gov).

It means waiting a little longer for the purchase, but I know Ill be happy with it.

What's the question about the radio? Three point pitch curves are simple. For your normal switch--set 0 pitch at mid stick, set the high point for the max pitch you want and low point for the most negative you want with the normal switch setting. For the stunt curve, set it at max negative (I make that -9.5), zero, and max postitive (I make that +9.5) Then the throttle curves match. For the stunt (idle up switch) curve, I set it at 100% on the bottom, 100% at the top, and then play with the middle setting to get the right throttle at zero. Probably will end up at about 35% or something like that.

I do use a governor--the GV-1. It does NOT require an extra channel and cannot use one unless it is controlled by a switch. The GV-1 can be set so that it turns on with the throttle stick/throttle setting. If you're at that point, let me know.
