Is there a place to get sheets of carbon fiber? Is there different grades and if so what kind would be the best for my heli?

MPI

MPI sells sheets of CF I believe a 2 square foot piece is priced pretty steep at like 25.00 dollars. I will check.

How exactly do you work CF anyway? Drilling I'd expect is reasonably straightforward (as long as you have spare bits handy and a high speed drill?) but from what I've heard it doesn't take well to being cut or sawed. Dremel with cutting wheel maybe?

I've purchased CF plate from ACP and they were great to deal with!. I built a bottom frame brace to replace the alu. one on the Futura so I could get the engine, muffler, clutch and fan shroud out as one peice. ACP sells saber saw blades for $5-6 that go thru CF plate like butter!. Look in the tools section of the web site. Most CF frames are made from .110" material and this is what I used...a sheet 24" x 18" was $54.00, a bit steep but well worth it. The plate comes in two flavors: with a glossy outside layer or without...I like the non-glossy type because it's cheaper and I paint my helicopter frames anyway...! One word of CAUTION: wear Safety glasses and a Dust Mask when you work this stuff...you don't want to ingest it or get it in your eyes. Be prepared to clean up a Hellva' mess if you do the cutting and grinding indoors...Outside is a better bet IMO. Chris

Ted,
Give me a ring on my cell tonight. I forgot to tell you that I was untill about 5 years ago in the carbon fiber pre-preg business and still have quite a bit of carbon fiber left around. Unfortunately the only sheet stock I have is linear and won't do much good for us with helicopters (it has strength in one direction only and will split the other way).
Call me after 9 PM if you can, I will be at work.
Of course, I have quite a bit of experience working with the stuff also.

Later,

BIGRCR- John Garst
