What a looser place. Im never going there again.
That's probably what they are hoping for....

Sounds like the city would like to do something else with the land and need everyone to stay away so they can justify it then.

Since the consensus is that Whittier Narrows is not a good place to fly. I'm curios where the rest of you guys fly at.

I live in Yorba Linda and it's about a 30 min drive to El Toro. Which I don't mind but the land is up for auction and I don't know how much longer we can fly there.

Thanks,
Dave

I live in San Fernando Valley,im 5 minutes away from the Sepulveda basin(Apollo Field) and 4 miles away from a private field (Port a potty-i think thats the name). And then there's Santa Fe Dam by 605/210 freeway,so there's is still few option left.

I fly near a Elementary school in La Habra. Near the corner of Euclid and Imperial Highway. Only if there's no kids playing on the field.

Narrows

So true about the Narrows. I flew there as a planker my self (before dedicating my life to helicopters) in 1994. I only saw ONE helicopter there ever. The "oldies" were inclined to leave you alone if you had a plane. Good thing is they won't live another 30 years to disturb the lives of younger kids getting in to radio controlled hobbies. I fly in Van Nuys now and have a great group of friends there.

If anyone is tired of the Narrows, come on up to Van Nuys, we welcome everyone (yes this means planes also!!) Great for kids, dogs, families, etc.

Crimsonheli,

My dog doesn't fly but thanks for the invite.

Actually I live the other way; Orange County but my parents live in Monterey Park which is really close to Whittier Narrows and I was hoping to fly there when I was in the area but it sounds like I wouldn't be welcome. Oh well....

Where is that field located?

I'd like to see that field myself.
Can anybody tell me where exactly the field is?
I have a job at Santa Fe Springs. Maybe I can
stop by to see on weekends.

Thanks.

So no word on where this field is at near the 710 and 91 fwys? I need some places to fly some forward flight and am struggling to find any. Can any of you guys help me out?

Orange County - El Toro, it seems it takes an act of god to get on the field, with $250 every six months or something like that.

Whittier Narrows - Old farts with planks and bad attitudes, don't have patience for them.

Carson field - Anyone help me out here, is it only on wekends?

Brea field - ANyone help here, is it only on weekends?

Here's what I understand:

El Toro is only $100 for 6 months ( I am a member) If you want to join drop me a private message or e-mail me at heli_av8r@adelphia.net

OCMA - web site needs updating

Brea aka Suzuki. I live 5 min away but never flown there. It is only weekends and only if there are no soccer games and it's very small IMO.

I've heard bad things about Whittier Narrows

Carson - Don't know

605 south of 91. El Dorado park. There is a club that operates there but it's mainly gliders and park flyers. I think there might be electric helis, not sure.

i finally read all the comments about this field that i've been flying at since the beginning of this year. i'm kind of surprised. i've been there almost every saturday and sunday since and have not seen anything like what you guys have mentioned so i'm not shocked but just surprised.

any rate, if you haven't been there lately.. you should come by. there's about 1,2,3,4.. a dozen of us that are regulars there. we all get along, joke around, have great fun and are commonly helping new pilots with their setups, flying, etc.. the bunch of us also work together to keep kids and straying people off the field for safety's sake.

ray introduced me to this field and have been here since. it seems quite a bit less windy than apollo field (in terms of frequency). it's been quite a spoil to fly in an all grass field that is trimmed every couple of weeks.

the only issues i've had with plankers is an occasional (and i mean pretty rare) stray flying into the heli section. but no evil words exchanged. in most cases talked to the pilots and found they were having flight issues.

true the field can get small. mostly because the pavement doesn't extend itself deep into the heli flight area and so we usually "camp out" near the planker section and walk our helis out for take-off.

pics of this field (from a heli pilot's perspective)
