Guys I just bought this Nitro conversion for a T-Rex 450, so far I have ordered a complete torque tube boom assy and other parts that are needed for this heli (It's a project for me to do).. But I'm at a loss whether to go with a flybar head or FBL one.. Please help ( I hope that I don't sound stupid).. You see I've never flown a FBL heli before..

You will still see an occasional flybar head, but by and large, the world has gone FBL. Seeing your photos, I really hope there is some upper mounting points for the engine mount; otherwise I would say you are going to get a lot of vibration from the engine, maybe to the point of a FBL unit not being able to work.

I would use a flybar head to begin with.
Keep it simple and get the thing sorted out before you complicate it with an FBL gyro.

But, I think a simple tailrotor gyro may be overwhelmed by the vibrations too.

You may have a "white whale" there. The mythical beast.
The legendary 450 nitro.

Throw it in the bin or TRY sell it on. Nitro's are great and I prefer them but anything smaller than a 550 needs to be electric. If flight time is your concern then dialing an electric down to give the same performance as that nitro will probably give you MORE flight time and so so SO much less head aches! Sorry.

60% of the time, it works every time!

What size engine is that? That is a neat project. I would go flybar initially till you get the airframe figured out. I would have gone with a belt tail to cut down on vibration.

Guys I gone with Flybar head for now, as for the vibration..I never thought of that, so I'll ask the guy about that, as he made the conversion.. Oh the engine is a new .18 Toki... All parts to complete the build are on order.

And here's the HPI nitro truck starter that I modded. I changed the feeble 550 motor for a $80 high torque one (It's a ball-raced one). and I replaced the 16 AWG wire to 14 AWG and since the motor can run up to 12 volts. I can use a 7.2v HiMH (4600 mAH) for small nitros and a 11.1v Lipo for the large nitros (4000 mAH).. But getting the thick Lipo battey wires into the tamia connector was very hard, cos the wires are so thick (Used Vaseline to do it).. The pistal starter is nice and light, and Comfortable in your hand, and has a built in clutch in case the engine locks up.. It' a lot better that the heavy drill ones that people use ..

I'll let you know how it goes with this build.....

Guys I had a word with the guy and he said that making upper engine supports won't be a problem. You see he has a small machine shop, and he's done other heli conversions too.. Also I ordered a belt driven tail unit too..

Lots of pictures with the updates, please. That is unique enough to warrant its own build thread

Ok will do...But lucky for me he hadn't shipped it, so he can make the upper supports that will be needed, as for that fuel tank that's in it.. I don't like it, so I get another one and it's be the other way round...

Oh, my heli collection is (2) 450 E-Razor's and that nitro 450 which will really be a T-Rex 450..

Please don't laugh.. But this is my training heli (Better than a sim)..I have changed the 2 motors for more powerful ones, and there's one servo on the wash-plate too (No motor on the tail). But to my surprise, is that the radio is 2.4Gz (100 meter range) and I have the wireless camera for it too (Transmitter has a button to turn the camera on for FPV.. Also it'll fly for 20 minutes on a fully charged lipo...

Well guys it came in the post today, and what a bargain I got..Inside the package was 3 (New) spare engines, 6 blade rotor head, and a muffler too.. With a note saying that he's giving up making these conversions (I bet that he can't make money doing it)..That's why he gave me the other engines)

Anyway looking at it.. The clutch drives 2 plasic gears which drives a small one way bearing shaft (In a bearing mount), and there's the electric motor pinon gear on top of the shaft which drives the main gear.. I must say a nice design.

However the clutch bell is rubbing on one of the hex head screws, and even though the engine mount is screwed down by four screws (M2x5mm).. You can still move it back and fourth, so I'll remove the engine and mount to see why the engine is not right in the middle of the mount (I'll be able to fix that, as its 2 pieces), and the mount sure does need supporting at the top (You are right about that), so I have a aluminum plate and will cut out 2 braces to solve that problem.. But for just $112 shipped (even with the minor problems), I came out a winner eh??

If he had tried to market these 10 years ago, it may have been a different story.

Yep your right (Poor guy). Oh, anyone know where I can get the 6mm hex adapter from, as I don't know what the one is on the engine..

Oh, as for the frame I'm going to dump it and go for a carbon fiber one..
