Since Mark clamped down on guns, it sure would be nice if the same rule was applied to religion.

I can't speak for Mark but I would guess that there is an upper limit to how far off-topic any direction this forum might be allowed to go. It seems there is considerable leeway for the respectable exchange of political ideas.

The buying, selling and use of guns is a bit of a hot topic today. We are allowed to discuss the political and ethical issues with them but I wonder if it isn't too much to ask when we begin discussing the outright exchange and servicing of them. "Should we allow guns?" - OK discussion. "Wanna buy my gun or which gun should I buy?" - Might take it to GunBroker.

Religion is an interesting question and a centuries old hot topic. Ironically, politics, religion and guns often turn into the same subject. Historically one begot the other. My impression is that differences in religion develop into differences in politics and those differences are settled with... guns.

To be upfront, I'm not a very religious person. But I am willing to discuss it - to a point. I wonder if we might not be allowed to discuss religion as long as it is a civil exchange? If* we can avoid name calling and judgment I wonder if it could be allowed to continue?

Bill

* It is not lost on me that almost all discussions of religion almost immediately morph into name calling and certainly judgment. I don't think Mark will have to end these discussions. We ourselves will.

If this is going to be a Heli only site then remove the sub forums of off topics, politics and the rest. Then you don’t have to hear other people’s view on those subjects.

But to have a section and have it regulated based on someone’s opinion or feeling about a subject is not right in my mind.

I am ok making this just a Heli site.

I am not ok with heli only.
This site brings together different opinions mostly from heli owner/operators, so the off topic discussions is great from heli owners, after all many are rather intelligent and well read, so I like their opinions. Very few get on this site that are not model heli/multirotor operators, so it is great the way it is.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

I agree with your thoughts. What I don’t agree with is people censoring what we can and can not talk about. If it is a current event like guns we could all use the education from both sides. Limiting this talk does not benifit the group as a whole. Like you said there are great people with well thought out points. Let there be freedom of speech or make it a Heli only sight. I can not see how you can have both.

Agree! Other than possibly moderating discussion of committing illegals acts, things should be open, and firearms are about as legal a topic you can get . . . .

Discussing the history or relative usefulness of class 3 weapons would likely pass without notice. Discussing how to modify the sear of a semi-auto AR to become full auto might need censure. Clearly there are limits to what is acceptable conversation on a helicopter forum.

To help understand why you might have one without the other, remember this, RR is not a democracy and freedom of speech as granted by the Constitution does not even distantly apply. RunRyder is a private, for-profit business and has been successful having been run by an individual. You might think of it as a benevolent dictatorship. If the individual that runs RunRyder determines a thread or topic is not in the best interest of himself, the site, or the model industry, so be it. That is how you can have both.
Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

My problem is not that a topic of guns was stopped but now people are asking to stop religion. What is the next person going to ask for this sight to stop talking about?

The tough part as the owner or a member is to sift through what should be and should not be on the site. It is a tough job that most would not want.

For me if I want to discuss guns or religion or anything else, I would go to those sites. Not Runryder. I come here for the Heli action.

I understand the sentiment. It's a helicopter forum. But I also think of it like being at the local flying field. Very often conversations with friends at the field do not include model helicopters. Sometimes they include local or national politics. Sometimes they include brisket smoking techniques. Sometimes they include motorcycles or guns. Not all conversations are for my benefit and we don't always agree. That's a good time for me to fuel up and go fly. The point being, just because it is a model flying field and populated with men and women flying models, does not mean we only talk about model helicopters. It's a gathering place for similarly minded people to fly and talk. That's not unlike RR.

Also know that here on RR there are some people that never "go fuel up and fly". They have little or no on-topic posts. They have thousands of off-topic posts but nothing to add to the building and flying of models. Most of these people have a transmitter but no receiver. We have people just like them at my flying field. They come every weekend and don't bring a thing to fly - or if they do bring a model, they don't fly it. We call them "seagulls - you have to throw a rock at them to make 'em fly." They are often very happy to tell us how we could do things better. We generally ignore them. The same technique works here.

Well, if you are going to take away gun discussions, then so should the religion be gone. Guns are a religion and there is no reason to ban them.
