I am going to stick with an old vehicle as long as I can where controls are knobs and switches you can feel for without taking your eyes off the road.
My daughter got a new SUV and while riding with her it was scary how much she had to look at the screen to adjust the air-conditioner and fan, then the radio and other functions.
A lot of accidents are going t happen, what's your opinion ?

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

While I havent shopped for a "modern" car, I'm surprised it doesnt have speech recognition for such just as cell phone does.

I agree they are dangerous to drive. The controls are a good idea if your sitting at a desk but not driving a car. They take your attention away from doing what you are trying to do, Drive..........

I have a 2010 with fancy radio... it is no different than using any other vehicle once you have it for a month. Even the fancy Benz are not a problem. Find something else to complain about.

People have been taking their eyes off the road to adjust their radios since they started installing radios in their car.

I drive a 21 year old sports car... why? cause it has a tried and true V8 (that I can fix), it has a 6 pd manual trans (that I can fix), and simple ECU with minimal sensors, and since its a sports car, there will always be aftermarket support for upgrades and OEM restoration.... the interior controls for the radio are on the steering wheel and the AC controls are 3 simple turn knobs.

All the new cars have so much computerized electronic control crap of which any one goes bad and the whole system becomes a PITA of annoying errors or in some cases renders the vehicle in-operable. anyone remember the fiasco with the new Vette?... the doors are electric pushbutton controlled to open... if your battery dies for some reason, you aint getting in (or out in one recorded 911 case) without busting the window.

...all for the purpose of feeding the dealer your $$$ for repairs or replacement car.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

I have a 2014 RAM 1500 Crew cab. I love my radio setup, but I do miss regular temperature sliders...as the touch panel is a PITA while driving and is slowwwwwwwwww to respond. Love my truck though......

Why aren't the designers smart enough to put that center mounted touch screen on a gimbal so you have a chance to touch the correct place on the screen while under way, or so your wife can turn it to punch in a new GPS setting?

The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

Oh gees. That is my opinion. All I hear is bla bla bla computers are taking over. Bla bla bla. Even though I am in fact old, I am not giving in and giving up. New is better, and the old days sucked. “ I don’t trust this self driving cars”, I see it as I can go for a drive and relax. I love new stuff(except the price). I intend to grow young in this old body of mine. Your opinion of touch screen is just old inept thinking. Keep it to yourself. Oooh time to change my depends.

You are entitled to your opinion. The whole thing is why you have to be so rude when conveying your message. You sound like a jerk -just my opinion and mean no disrespect.

It really burns me when thousands or hundreds of thousands of hours are spent developing a product like the touch screen radio and someone comes along and rips it with comments like you see here at RR. The world that is coming is 10 times better than what we have now.

The girl killed in the accident with the self driving car commited suicide. She could easily see a car was coming and she ran into it. Now the self-driving technology is in question. Arizona put the technology on hold. Now everyone is poo pooing the greatest advancement in cars in the last 75 years. I hear that "I will never buy one". I say, sell me one today. It will be much better than many drivers out there today. Yet we hear, "no it scares me.", "I don't trust it".

Today I read a story about a self driving car did not stop for a pedestrian more than 10 feet away in a pedestrian cross walk. The "passenger" got a ticket for not letting the pedestrian cross. Most drivers would have done the same thing. Mod the technology, don't ban it.

Old people poo poo any change. You know they do. Stop acting old.

No.. touch screens are not anything like texting.

what are you talking about? the UBER self driving car in Arizona hit a 49yr old woman crossing the street holding a bicycle at night... the company deliberately disabled the Volvo auto braking safety feature because it was causing problems with the autonomous driving system they installed.

I dont want to sound like a snowflake but my point is that RR off topics has become a place for insults. Most of us here are 40 plus. I would like to think I am chitchating with adults and not a bunch of old teenegers.
As I said, having one outhouse, metallizer, abyzann, etc is more than enough. I truly believe you can convey your message being respecful, that’s all ....

My problem is that...
Nothing personal as I just wanted to point out "what if...?" everytime anything posted in off topics politics got the same remark...including the ones you start.

BTW..winter is over and when usually the forum gets a little heated.

Back on topic...

Actually, IMHO...maybe worst given location of touch screen (center of console) as opposed to bringing a cell phone below eye level field of view in front of you when driving. FACTUALLY , they both distract your from the full attention driving requires, specially in congested areas.

I do know you can bind your phone to the car sounds system and can speak hands free, so no issues unless debating politics and opinions.

None indeed. Perhaps the tone? You might agree with me that your last statement/question was not needed since you have already conveyed your point. The tone might be perceived as an aggression escalating the whole discussion, resulting in what has become the normal in the off topic section.

All I know, to add my $.02, is that I have been able to operate the radio in my car without looking at it for years prior to the touchscreen nonsense. A known control layout and good tactile feel allow you to find the correct control without looking easily . . . Touchscreens remove that ability. Heck, even the Air Force, as I recall, determined that individual controls and round gauges with the nominal values placed pointing upward were the easiest and most efficient to use in terms of time away from looking out the window . . . It appears that the folks designing cars are falling to the "make it cutesy - who cares if it's actually practical!" trend running the industry these days . . . My job is technology, so don't get started on the "he's old" crap . . . I don't care what your age is, some things are just easier for "the human interface" (IE fingers and eyes) to work with than others, and age is not a factor in that . . . .

Friends don't let friends become electrotarded . . . .
